1 そこでテマンびとエリパズは答えて言った、 Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,
2 「知者はむなしき知識をもって答えるであろうか。東風をもってその腹を満たすであろうか。 Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?
3 役に立たない談話をもって論じるであろうか。無益な言葉をもって争うであろうか。 Should he reason with unprofitable talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?
4 ところがあなたは神を恐れることを捨て、神の前に祈る事をやめている。 Yea, thou castest off fear, and restrainest prayer before God.
5 あなたの罪はあなたの口を教え、あなたは悪賢い人の舌を選び用いる。 For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.
6 あなたの口みずからあなたの罪を定める、わたしではない。あなたのくちびるがあなたに逆らって証明する。 Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I: yea, thine own lips testify against thee.
7 あなたは最初に生れた人であるのか。山よりも先に生れたのか。 Art thou the first man that was born? or wast thou made before the hills?
8 あなたは神の会議にあずかったのか。あなたは知恵を独占しているのか。 Hast thou heard the secret of God? and dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself?
9 あなたが知るものはわれわれも知るではないか。あなたが悟るものはわれわれも悟るではないか。 What knowest thou, that we know not? what understandest thou, which is not in us?
10 われわれの中にはしらがの人も、年老いた人もあって、あなたの父よりも年上だ。 With us are both the grayheaded and very aged men, much elder than thy father.
11 神の慰めおよびあなたに対するやさしい言葉も、あなたにとって、あまりに小さいというのか。 Are the consolations of God small with thee? is there any secret thing with thee?
12 どうしてあなたの心は狂うのか。どうしてあなたの目はしばたたくのか。 Why doth thine heart carry thee away? and what do thy eyes wink at,
13 あなたが神にむかって気をいらだて、このような言葉をあなたの口から出すのはなぜか。 That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth?
14 人はいかなる者か、どうしてこれは清くありえよう。女から生れた者は、どうして正しくありえよう。 What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
15 見よ、神はその聖なる者にすら信を置かれない、もろもろの天も彼の目には清くない。 Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight.
16 まして憎むべき汚れた者、また不義を水のように飲む人においては。 How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water?
17 わたしはあなたに語ろう、聞くがよい。わたしは自分の見た事を述べよう。 I will shew thee, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare;
18 これは知者たちがその先祖からうけて、隠す所なく語り伝えたものである。 Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it:
19 彼らにのみこの地は授けられて、他国人はその中に行き来したことがなかった。 Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.
20 悪しき人は一生の間、もだえ苦しむ。残酷な人には年の数が定められている。 The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor.
21 その耳には恐ろしい音が聞え、繁栄の時にも滅ぼす者が彼に臨む。 A dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.
22 彼は、暗やみから帰りうるとは信ぜず、つるぎにねらわれる。 He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword.
23 彼は食物はどこにあるかと言いつつさまよい、暗き日が手近に備えられてあるのを知る。 He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.
24 悩みと苦しみとが彼を恐れさせ、戦いの備えをした王のように彼に打ち勝つ。 Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.
25 これは彼が神に逆らってその手を伸べ、全能者に逆らって高慢にふるまい、 For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty.
26 盾の厚い面をもって強情に、彼にはせ向かうからだ。 He runneth upon him, even on his neck, upon the thick bosses of his bucklers:
27 また彼は脂肪をもってその顔をおおい、その腰には脂肪の肉を集め、 Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks.
28 滅ぼされた町々に住み、人の住まない家、荒塚となる所におるからだ。 And he dwelleth in desolate cities, and in houses which no man inhabiteth, which are ready to become heaps.
29 彼は富める者とならず、その富はながく続かない、また地に根を張ることはない。 He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he prolong the perfection thereof upon the earth.
30 彼は暗やみからのがれることができない。炎はその若枝を枯らし、その花は風に吹き去られる。 He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.
31 彼をしてみずから欺いて、むなしい事にたよらせてはならない。その報いはむなしいからだ。 Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence.
32 彼の時のこない前にその事がなし遂げられ、彼の枝は緑とならないであろう。 It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green.
33 彼はぶどうの木のように、その熟さない実をふり落すであろう。またオリブの木のように、その花を落すであろう。 He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive.
34 神を信じない者のやからは子なく、まいないによる天幕は火で焼き滅ぼされるからだ。 For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery.
35 彼らは害悪をはらみ、不義を生み、その腹は偽りをつくる」。 They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepareth deceit.
