| 1 | 長老のわたしから、真実に愛している親愛なるガイオへ。 | The elder unto the wellbeloved Gaius, whom I love in the truth. |
| 2 | 愛する者よ。あなたのたましいがいつも恵まれていると同じく、あなたがすべてのことに恵まれ、またすこやかであるようにと、わたしは祈っている。 | Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth. |
| 3 | 兄弟たちがきて、あなたが真理に生きていることを、あかししてくれたので、ひじょうに喜んでいる。事実、あなたは真理のうちを歩いているのである。 | For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth. |
| 4 | わたしの子供たちが真理のうちを歩いていることを聞く以上に、大きい喜びはない。 | I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth. |
| 5 | 愛する者よ。あなたが、兄弟たち、しかも旅先にある者につくしていることは、みな真実なわざである。 | Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers; |
| 6 | 彼らは、諸教会で、あなたの愛についてあかしをした。それらの人々を、神のみこころにかなうように送り出してくれたら、それは願わしいことである。 | Which have borne witness of thy charity before the church: whom if thou bring forward on their journey after a godly sort, thou shalt do well: |
| 7 | 彼らは、御名のために旅立った者であって、異邦人からは何も受けていない。 | Because that for his name’s sake they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles. |
| 8 | それだから、わたしたちは、真理のための同労者となるように、こういう人々を助けねばならない。 | We therefore ought to receive such, that we might be fellowhelpers to the truth. |
| 9 | わたしは少しばかり教会に書きおくっておいたが、みんなのかしらになりたがっているデオテレペスが、わたしたちを受けいれてくれない。 | I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not. |
| 10 | だから、わたしがそちらへ行った時、彼のしわざを指摘しようと思う。彼は口ぎたなくわたしたちをののしり、そればかりか、兄弟たちを受けいれようともせず、受けいれようとする人たちを妨げて、教会から追い出している。 | Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church. |
| 11 | 愛する者よ。悪にならわないで、善にならいなさい。善を行う者は神から出た者であり、悪を行う者は神を見たことのない者である。 | Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God. |
| 12 | デメテリオについては、あらゆる人も、また真理そのものも、証明している。わたしたちも証明している。そして、あなたが知っているとおり、わたしたちの証明は真実である。 | Demetrius hath good report of all men, and of the truth itself: yea, and we also bear record; and ye know that our record is true. |
| 13 | あなたに書きおくりたいことはたくさんあるが、墨と筆とで書くことはすまい。 | I had many things to write, but I will not with ink and pen write unto thee: |
| 14 | すぐにでもあなたに会って、直接はなし合いたいものである。 平安が、あなたにあるように。友人たちから、あなたによろしく。友人たちひとりびとりに、よろしく。 | But I trust I shall shortly see thee, and we shall speak face to face. Peace be to thee. Our friends salute thee. Greet the friends by name. |
