1 主なる神はこのようにわたしに示された。見よ、二番草のはえ出る初めに主は、いなごを造られた。見よ、その二番草は王の刈った後に、はえたものである。 Thus hath the Lord God shewed unto me; and, behold, he formed grasshoppers in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth; and, lo, it was the latter growth after the king’s mowings.
2 そのいなごが地の青草を食い尽した時、わたしは言った、「主なる神よ、どうぞ、ゆるしてください。ヤコブは小さい者です、どうして立つことができましょう」。 And it came to pass, that when they had made an end of eating the grass of the land, then I said, O Lord God, forgive, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small.
3 主はこのことについて思いかえされ、「このことは起さない」と主は言われた。 The Lord repented for this: It shall not be, saith the Lord.
4 主なる神はこのようにわたしに示された。見よ、主なる神はさばきのために火を呼ばれた。火は大淵を焼き、また地を焼こうとした。 Thus hath the Lord God shewed unto me: and, behold, the Lord God called to contend by fire, and it devoured the great deep, and did eat up a part.
5 その時わたしは言った、「主なる神よ、どうぞ、やめてください。ヤコブは小さい者です、どうして立つことができましょう」。 Then said I, O Lord God, cease, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small.
6 主はこのことについて思いかえされ、「このこともまた起さない」と主なる神は言われた。 The Lord repented for this: This also shall not be, saith the Lord God.
7 また主はわたしに示された。見よ、主は測りなわをもって築いた石がきの上に立ち、その手に測りなわをもっておられた。 Thus he shewed me: and, behold, the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand.
8 そして主はわたしに言われた、「アモスよ、あなたは何を見るか」。「測りなわ」とわたしが答えると、主はまた言われた、「見よ、わたしは測りなわをわが民イスラエルの中に置く。わたしはもはや彼らを見過しにしない。 And the Lord said unto me, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumbline. Then said the Lord, Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more:
9 イサクの高き所は荒され、イスラエルの聖所は荒れはてる。わたしはつるぎをもってヤラベアムの家に立ち向かう」。 And the high places of Isaac shall be desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.
10 時にベテルの祭司アマジヤは、イスラエルの王ヤラベアムに人をつかわして言う、「イスラエルの家のただ中で、アモスはあなたにそむきました。この地は彼のもろもろの言葉に耐えることができません。 Then Amaziah the priest of Beth–el sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel: the land is not able to bear all his words.
11 アモスはこのように言っています、『ヤラベアムはつるぎによって死ぬ、イスラエルは必ず捕えられて行って、その国を離れる』と」。 For thus Amos saith, Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of their own land.
12 それからアマジヤはアモスに言った、「先見者よ、行ってユダの地にのがれ、かの地でパンを食べ、かの地で預言せよ。 Also Amaziah said unto Amos, O thou seer, go, flee thee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there:
13 しかしベテルでは二度と預言してはならない。ここは王の聖所、国の宮だから」。 But prophesy not again any more at Beth–el: for it is the king’s chapel, and it is the king’s court.
14 アモスはアマジヤに答えた、「わたしは預言者でもなく、また預言者の子でもない。わたしは牧者である。わたしはいちじく桑の木を作る者である。 Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet’s son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit:
15 ところが主は群れに従っている所からわたしを取り、『行って、わが民イスラエルに預言せよ』と、主はわたしに言われた。 And the Lord took me as I followed the flock, and the Lord said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel.
16 それゆえ今、主の言葉を聞け。あなたは言う、『イスラエルに向かって預言するな、イサクの家に向かって語るな』と。 Now therefore hear thou the word of the Lord: Thou sayest, Prophesy not against Israel, and drop not thy word against the house of Isaac.
17 それゆえ、主はこう言われる、『あなたの妻は町で遊女となり、あなたのむすこ、娘たちはつるぎに倒れ、あなたの地は測りなわで分かたれる。そしてあなたは汚れた地で死に、イスラエルは必ず捕えられて行って、その国を離れる』」。 Therefore thus saith the Lord; Thy wife shall be an harlot in the city, and thy sons and thy daughters shall fall by the sword, and thy land shall be divided by line; and thou shalt die in a polluted land: and Israel shall surely go into captivity forth of his land.
