1 兄弟たちよ。その時期と場合とについては、書きおくる必要はない。 But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.
2 あなたがた自身がよく知っているとおり、主の日は盗人が夜くるように来る。 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.
3 人々が平和だ無事だと言っているその矢先に、ちょうど妊婦に産みの苦しみが臨むように、突如として滅びが彼らをおそって来る。そして、それからのがれることは決してできない。 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.
4 しかし兄弟たちよ。あなたがたは暗やみの中にいないのだから、その日が、盗人のようにあなたがたを不意に襲うことはないであろう。 But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.
5 あなたがたはみな光の子であり、昼の子なのである。わたしたちは、夜の者でもやみの者でもない。 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.
6 だから、ほかの人々のように眠っていないで、目をさまして慎んでいよう。 Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.
7 眠る者は夜眠り、酔う者は夜酔うのである。 For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.
8 しかし、わたしたちは昼の者なのだから、信仰と愛との胸当を身につけ、救の望みのかぶとをかぶって、慎んでいよう。 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.
9 神は、わたしたちを怒りにあわせるように定められたのではなく、わたしたちの主イエス・キリストによって救を得るように定められたのである。 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,
10 キリストがわたしたちのために死なれたのは、さめていても眠っていても、わたしたちが主と共に生きるためである。 Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.
11 だから、あなたがたは、今しているように、互に慰め合い、相互の徳を高めなさい。 Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.
12 兄弟たちよ。わたしたちはお願いする。どうか、あなたがたの間で労し、主にあってあなたがたを指導し、かつ訓戒している人々を重んじ、 And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you;
13 彼らの働きを思って、特に愛し敬いなさい。互に平和に過ごしなさい。 And to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. And be at peace among yourselves.
14 兄弟たちよ。あなたがたにお勧めする。怠惰な者を戒め、小心な者を励まし、弱い者を助け、すべての人に対して寛容でありなさい。 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.
15 だれも悪をもって悪に報いないように心がけ、お互に、またみんなに対して、いつも善を追い求めなさい。 See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.
16 いつも喜んでいなさい。 Rejoice evermore.
17 絶えず祈りなさい。 Pray without ceasing.
18 すべての事について、感謝しなさい。これが、キリスト・イエスにあって、神があなたがたに求めておられることである。 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
19 御霊を消してはいけない。 Quench not the Spirit.
20 預言を軽んじてはならない。 Despise not prophesyings.
21 すべてのものを識別して、良いものを守り、 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.
22 あらゆる種類の悪から遠ざかりなさい。 Abstain from all appearance of evil.
23 どうか、平和の神ご自身が、あなたがたを全くきよめて下さるように。また、あなたがたの霊と心とからだとを完全に守って、わたしたちの主イエス・キリストの来臨のときに、責められるところのない者にして下さるように。 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
24 あなたがたを召されたかたは真実であられるから、このことをして下さるであろう。 Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.
25 兄弟たちよ。わたしたちのためにも、祈ってほしい。 Brethren, pray for us.
26 すべての兄弟たちに、きよい接吻をもって、よろしく伝えてほしい。 Greet all the brethren with an holy kiss.
27 わたしは主によって命じる。この手紙を、みんなの兄弟に読み聞かせなさい。 I charge you by the Lord that this epistle be read unto all the holy brethren.
28 わたしたちの主イエス・キリストの恵みが、あなたがたと共にあるように。 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen. The first epistle unto the Thessalonians was written from Athens.
