| 2 | わたしたちの兄弟で、キリストの福音における神の同労者テモテをつかわした。それは、あなたがたの信仰を強め、 | And sent Timotheus, our brother, and minister of God, and our fellowlabourer in the gospel of Christ, to establish you, and to comfort you concerning your faith: |
| 3 | このような患難の中にあって、動揺する者がひとりもないように励ますためであった。あなたがたの知っているとおり、わたしたちは患難に会うように定められているのである。 | That no man should be moved by these afflictions: for yourselves know that we are appointed thereunto. |
| 4 | そして、あなたがたの所にいたとき、わたしたちがやがて患難に会うことをあらかじめ言っておいたが、あなたがたの知っているように、今そのとおりになったのである。 | For verily, when we were with you, we told you before that we should suffer tribulation; even as it came to pass, and ye know. |
| 5 | そこで、わたしはこれ以上耐えられなくなって、もしや「試みる者」があなたがたを試み、そのためにわたしたちの労苦がむだになりはしないかと気づかって、あなたがたの信仰を知るために、彼をつかわしたのである。 | For this cause, when I could no longer forbear, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter have tempted you, and our labour be in vain. |

| 9 | ほんとうに、わたしたちの神のみまえで、あなたがたのことで喜ぶ大きな喜びのために、どんな感謝を神にささげたらよいだろうか。 | For what thanks can we render to God again for you, for all the joy wherewith we joy for your sakes before our God; |
| 10 | わたしたちは、あなたがたの顔を見、あなたがたの信仰の足りないところを補いたいと、日夜しきりに願っているのである。 | Night and day praying exceedingly that we might see your face, and might perfect that which is lacking in your faith? |
| 11 | どうか、わたしたちの父なる神ご自身と、わたしたちの主イエスとが、あなたがたのところへ行く道を、わたしたちに開いて下さるように。 | Now God himself and our Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct our way unto you. |
| 12 | どうか、主が、あなたがた相互の愛とすべての人に対する愛とを、わたしたちがあなたがたを愛する愛と同じように、増し加えて豊かにして下さるように。 | And the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men, even as we do toward you: |
| 13 | そして、どうか、わたしたちの主イエスが、そのすべての聖なる者と共にこられる時、神のみまえに、あなたがたの心を強め、清く、責められるところのない者にして下さるように。 | To the end he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints. |
