1 ああ、物わかりのわるいガラテヤ人よ。十字架につけられたイエス・キリストが、あなたがたの目の前に描き出されたのに、いったい、だれがあなたがたを惑わしたのか。 O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you?
2 わたしは、ただこの一つの事を、あなたがたに聞いてみたい。あなたがたが御霊を受けたのは、律法を行ったからか、それとも、聞いて信じたからか。 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
3 あなたがたは、そんなに物わかりがわるいのか。御霊で始めたのに、今になって肉で仕上げるというのか。 Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?
4 あれほどの大きな経験をしたことは、むだであったのか。まさか、むだではあるまい。 Have ye suffered so many things in vain? if it be yet in vain.
5 すると、あなたがたに御霊を賜い、力あるわざをあなたがたの間でなされたのは、律法を行ったからか、それとも、聞いて信じたからか。 He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
6 このように、アブラハムは「神を信じた。それによって、彼は義と認められた」のである。 Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.
7 だから、信仰による者こそアブラハムの子であることを、知るべきである。 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.
8 聖書は、神が異邦人を信仰によって義とされることを、あらかじめ知って、アブラハムに、「あなたによって、すべての国民は祝福されるであろう」との良い知らせを、予告したのである。 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.
9 このように、信仰による者は、信仰の人アブラハムと共に、祝福を受けるのである。 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.
10 いったい、律法の行いによる者は、皆のろいの下にある。「律法の書に書いてあるいっさいのことを守らず、これを行わない者は、皆のろわれる」と書いてあるからである。 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.
11 そこで、律法によっては、神のみまえに義とされる者はひとりもないことが、明らかである。なぜなら、「信仰による義人は生きる」からである。 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.
12 律法は信仰に基いているものではない。かえって、「律法を行う者は律法によって生きる」のである。 And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them.
13 キリストは、わたしたちのためにのろいとなって、わたしたちを律法ののろいからあがない出して下さった。聖書に、「木にかけられる者は、すべてのろわれる」と書いてある。 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
14 それは、アブラハムの受けた祝福が、イエス・キリストにあって異邦人に及ぶためであり、約束された御霊を、わたしたちが信仰によって受けるためである。 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
15 兄弟たちよ。世のならわしを例にとって言おう。人間の遺言でさえ、いったん作成されたら、これを無効にしたり、これに付け加えたりすることは、だれにもできない。 Brethren, I speak after the manner of men; Though it be but a man’s covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto.
16 さて、約束は、アブラハムと彼の子孫とに対してなされたのである。それは、多数をさして「子孫たちとに」と言わずに、ひとりをさして「あなたの子孫とに」と言っている。これは、キリストのことである。 Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.
17 わたしの言う意味は、こうである。神によってあらかじめ立てられた契約が、四百三十年の後にできた律法によって破棄されて、その約束がむなしくなるようなことはない。 And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect.
18 もし相続が、律法に基いてなされるとすれば、もはや約束に基いたものではない。ところが事実、神は約束によって、相続の恵みをアブラハムに賜わったのである。 For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise.
19 それでは、律法はなんであるか。それは違反を促すため、あとから加えられたのであって、約束されていた子孫が来るまで存続するだけのものであり、かつ、天使たちをとおし、仲介者の手によって制定されたものにすぎない。 Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.
20 仲介者なるものは、一方だけに属する者ではない。しかし、神はひとりである。 Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one.
21 では、律法は神の約束と相いれないものか。断じてそうではない。もし人を生かす力のある律法が与えられていたとすれば、義はたしかに律法によって実現されたであろう。 Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law.
22 しかし、約束が、信じる人々にイエス・キリストに対する信仰によって与えられるために、聖書はすべての人を罪の下に閉じ込めたのである。 But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.
23 しかし、信仰が現れる前には、わたしたちは律法の下で監視されており、やがて啓示される信仰の時まで閉じ込められていた。 But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.
24 このようにして律法は、信仰によって義とされるために、わたしたちをキリストに連れて行く養育掛となったのである。 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
25 しかし、いったん信仰が現れた以上、わたしたちは、もはや養育掛のもとにはいない。 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.
26 あなたがたはみな、キリスト・イエスにある信仰によって、神の子なのである。 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
27 キリストに合うバプテスマを受けたあなたがたは、皆キリストを着たのである。 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
28 もはや、ユダヤ人もギリシヤ人もなく、奴隷も自由人もなく、男も女もない。あなたがたは皆、キリスト・イエスにあって一つだからである。 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
29 もしキリストのものであるなら、あなたがたはアブラハムの子孫であり、約束による相続人なのである。 And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.
