| 1 | そのころ，弟子たちの数が殖えていた時，ヘレニストたちからヘブライ人たちに対して苦情が起こった。彼らのやもめたちが日々の援助においてないがしろにされていたからであった。 | And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration. |
| 2 | 十二人は弟子たちの集団を呼び集めてこう言った。「わたしたちが神の言葉を放っておいて，食卓のために仕えるのはふさわしくありません。 | Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables. |
| 3 | ですから，兄弟たち，あなた方の中から，聖霊と知恵とに満ちた評判の良い人を七人選び出しなさい。わたしたちがこの仕事の上に任命するためです。 | Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. |
| 4 | わたしたちのほうは，祈りとみ言葉の奉仕とにひたすらとどまることにします」。 | But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word. |
| 5 | これらの言葉は全員の賛成を得た。彼らは，信仰と聖霊とに満ちた人ステファノ，またフィリポ，プロコルス，ニカノル，ティモン，パルメナ，アンティオキアの改宗者ニコラウスを選び出して， | And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch: |
| 6 | 使徒たちの前に立たせた。使徒たちは祈って彼らの上に手を置いた。 | Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them. |
| 7 | 神の言葉は増し加わってゆき，弟子たちの数もエルサレムにおいて非常に殖えていった。大勢の祭司たちがこの信仰に従っていた。 | And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith. |
| 8 | ステファノは信仰と力に満ち，民の間ですばらしい不思議な業やしるしを行なっていた。 | And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people. |
| 9 | しかし，「リベルティン」と呼ばれる会堂に属する人々，およびキュレネ人，アレクサンドリア人，またキリキアやアシア出身の人々のうちのある者たちが立ち上がり，ステファノと議論した。 | Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen. |
| 10 | 彼らは，彼に語らせている知恵と霊には対抗できなかった。 | And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake. |
| 11 | そこで，ひそかに人々をそそのかして，「わたしたちは，彼がモーセと神に対して冒とくの言葉を吐くのを聞いた」と言わせた。 | Then they suborned men, which said, We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses, and against God. |
| 12 | 民や長老たちや律法学者たちを扇動し，彼を襲って捕らえ，最高法院に引いて行き， | And they stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and came upon him, and caught him, and brought him to the council, |
| 13 | 偽りの証人たちを立てて言わせた，「この男は，この聖なる場所と律法に対して冒とくの言葉を吐いて，どうしてもやめません。 | And set up false witnesses, which said, This man ceaseth not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law: |
| 14 | というのも，わたしたちは彼が，あのナザレのイエスはこの場所を壊し，モーセがわたしたちに伝えた慣習を変えるだろう，と言うのを聞いたのです」。 | For we have heard him say, that this Jesus of Nazareth shall destroy this place, and shall change the customs which Moses delivered us. |
| 15 | 最高法院に座っていた者たちはみな彼を見つめたが，その顔はみ使いの顔のように見えた。 | And all that sat in the council, looking stedfastly on him, saw his face as it had been the face of an angel. |
