1 さて，使徒たちやユダヤにいる兄弟たちは，異邦人たちも神の言葉を受け入れたことを耳にした。 And the apostles and brethren that were in Judea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God.
2 ペトロがエルサレムに上って来たとき，割礼のある者たちは彼に議論を挑んで And when Peter was come up to Jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision contended with him,
3 言った，「あなたは，割礼を受けていない人々のところに入って，彼らと一緒に食事をした！」 Saying, Thou wentest in to men uncircumcised, and didst eat with them.
4 しかしペトロは口を開き，次のように言って順序正しく説明した。 But Peter rehearsed the matter from the beginning, and expounded it by order unto them, saying,
5 「わたしがヨッパの町で祈っていると，我を忘れた状態になって，幻を見ました。大きな布のような入れ物が，四隅で天からつり降ろされているようでした。ついに，わたしのところにまで下りて来ました。 I was in the city of Joppa praying: and in a trance I saw a vision, A certain vessel descend, as it had been a great sheet, let down from heaven by four corners; and it came even to me:
6 目を凝らしてその中をよく見ると，地上の四つ足の獣，野獣，はうもの，空の鳥などがいました。 Upon the which when I had fastened mine eyes, I considered, and saw fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air.
7 さらに声がして，わたしに言いました，『立ちなさい，ペトロよ，ほふって食べなさい！』 And I heard a voice saying unto me, Arise, Peter; slay and eat.
8 しかしわたしは言いました，『主よ，とんでもありません。神聖でないものや汚れたものなど，これまで一度も口に入れたことがないのです』。 But I said, Not so, Lord: for nothing common or unclean hath at any time entered into my mouth.
9 すると，天から二度目に声が出て，わたしに答えました，『神が清くしたものを，汚れたものと呼んではならない』 。 But the voice answered me again from heaven, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.
10 こうしたことが三度あってから，すべてのものは再び天に引き上げられました。 And this was done three times: and all were drawn up again into heaven.
11 ちょうどその時，カエサレアからわたしのところへ遣わされて来た三人の人々が，わたしのいた家の前に立ちました。 And, behold, immediately there were three men already come unto the house where I was, sent from Cesarea unto me.
12 霊がわたしに，何も疑わずに彼らと共に行くように告げました。ここにいる六人の兄弟たちもわたしに付いて来て，わたしたちはその人の家に入りました。 And the spirit bade me go with them, nothing doubting. Moreover these six brethren accompanied me, and we entered into the man’s house:
13 その人はわたしたちに，み使いが家の中に立っているのを見たこと，また，そのみ使いがこう述べたことを話してくれました。『ヨッパに人を遣わして，またの名をペトロというシモンを招きなさい。 And he shewed us how he had seen an angel in his house, which stood and said unto him, Send men to Joppa, and call for Simon, whose surname is Peter;
14 彼は，あなたとあなたの家族全員を救う言葉をあなたに語るだろう』。 Who shall tell thee words, whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved.
15 わたしが話し始めると，聖霊が彼らの上に，最初にわたしたちの上に下ったのと同じようにして下ったのです。 And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning.
16 わたしは，主が言われたこの言葉を思い出しました。『ヨハネは確かに水でバプテスマを施したが，あなた方は聖霊によってバプテスマを施されることになる』 。 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.
17 それで，わたしたちが主イエス・キリストを信じた時に下さったのと同じ贈り物を，神が彼らにお与えになったのであれば，どうしてわたしのような者が神に逆らうことができたでしょうか」。 Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God?
18 これらのことを聞くと，彼らは静かになり，神の栄光をたたえて言った，「それでは神は，命に至る悔い改めを異邦人たちにもお与えになったのだ！」 When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.
19 それゆえ，ステファノのことで起こった圧迫のために散らされた人々は，フェニキア，キュプロス，アンティオキアにまで旅をしたが，ユダヤ人以外にはだれにもみ言葉を語らなかった。 Now they which were scattered abroad upon the persecution that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Phenice, and Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to none but unto the Jews only.
20 しかし，その中にキュプロスやキュレネの者たちがいて，アンティオキアへ行き，ギリシャ人たちに語って，主イエスのことを宣教した。 And some of them were men of Cyprus and Cyrene, which, when they were come to Antioch, spake unto the Grecians, preaching the Lord Jesus.
21 主のみ手が彼らと共にあったので，信じて主に立ち返った者たちは非常に多数であった。 And the hand of the Lord was with them: and a great number believed, and turned unto the Lord.
22 彼らに関する知らせがエルサレムにあった集会の耳に入った。集会はバルナバをアンティオキアにまで遣わした。 Then tidings of these things came unto the ears of the church which was in Jerusalem: and they sent forth Barnabas, that he should go as far as Antioch.
23 そこに到着して神の恵みを見ると，彼は喜んだ。心の決意をもって主のそばにとどまるようにと，みんなを励ました。 Who, when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord.
24 彼は善い人で，聖霊と信仰とに満ちていたからである。こうして，大勢の人々が主のもとに加えられた。 For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith: and much people was added unto the Lord.
25 バルナバはサウロを探しにタルソスに出かけて行った。 Then departed Barnabas to Tarsus, for to seek Saul:
26 彼を見つけて，アンティオキアに連れて来た。二人はまる一年のあいだ集会と共に集まり，多くの人々を教えた。このアンティオキアで，弟子たちは初めてクリスチャンと呼ばれるようになった。 And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.
27 そのころ，預言者たちがエルサレムからアンティオキアに下って来た。 And in these days came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch.
28 彼らの中のアガボスという者が立って，大ききんが全世界に臨もうとしていることを霊によって示したが，これは実際にクラウディウスの時代に起こった。 And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the spirit that there should be great dearth throughout all the world: which came to pass in the days of Claudius Cesar.
29 そこで弟子たちは，それぞれの豊かさに応じて，ユダヤに住んでいる兄弟たちに救援物資を送ることに決めた。 Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judea:
30 それを実行し，バルナバとサウロの手によって長老たちに送り届けた。 Which also they did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.
