1 そのころ，領主ヘロデはイエスに関する評判を聞いて， At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus,
2 自分の召使いたちに言った，「これはバプテスマを施す人ヨハネだ。彼は死んだ者たちの中から生き返ったのだ。それで，こうした力が彼の内に働いているのだ」。 And said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.
3 というのは，ヘロデは，自分の兄弟フィリポの妻ヘロディアのために，ヨハネを逮捕して縛り，ろうやに入れていたからであった。 For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias’ sake, his brother Philip’s wife.
4 それは，ヨハネがヘロデに，「あなたが彼女を有しているのは，許されることではない」と言ったからである。 For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.
5 ヘロデは彼を死に至らせたいと思っていたが，群衆を恐れた。人々は彼を預言者とみなしていたからである。 And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.
6 ところが，ヘロデの誕生日がやって来た時，ヘロディアの娘が彼らの間で踊ってヘロデを喜ばせた。 But when Herod’s birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod.
7 そこで，彼は彼女の求めるものは何でも与えると，誓って約束した。 Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask.
8 彼女はその母に促されて言った，「バプテスマを施す人ヨハネの首を大皿に載せて，わたしにお与えください」。 And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist’s head in a charger.
9 王は悲しんだが，自分の誓い，また自分と共に食卓に着いていた者たちのゆえに，それが与えられるように命じ， And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath’s sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her.
10 人を遣わして，ろうやでヨハネの首をはねさせた。 And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.
11 彼の首は大皿に載せて運ばれて，乙女に与えられた。そして彼女はそれを自分の母のところに持って行った。 And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother.
12 ヨハネの弟子たちはやって来て，彼の死体を引き取り，それを葬った。そして，出て行ってイエスに知らせた。 And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.
13 さて，イエスはこのことを聞くと，舟でそこを去り，自分だけで寂しい場所に退いた。群衆はそれを聞いて，町々から徒歩で彼に従った。 When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart: and when the people had heard thereof, they followed him on foot out of the cities.
14 イエスは出て来て，大群衆を目にした。彼らに対して哀れみを抱き，彼らの中の病気の人をいやした。 And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.
15 夕方になった時，弟子たちが彼のもとに来て，こう言った。「ここは寂しい場所ですし，すでに時刻も遅くなっています。群衆を去らせて，彼らが村々に入り，自分たちで食物を買うようにさせてください」。 And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals.
16 しかしイエスは彼らに言った，「彼らが出かけて行く必要はない。あなた方が彼らに食べ物を与えなさい」 。 But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat.
17 彼らは彼に言った，「わたしたちはここに，五つのパンと二匹の魚しか持っていません」。 And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes.
18 彼は言った，「それをここに，わたしのところに持って来なさい」 。 He said, Bring them hither to me.
19 彼は草の上に座るよう群衆に命じた。そして，五つのパンと二匹の魚を取り，天を見上げて祝福し，パンを裂いて弟子たちに与え，弟子たちが群衆に与えた。 And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.
20 みんなは食べて満ち足りた。彼らは余ったパン切れを，十二のかごいっぱいに拾い集めた。 And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full.
21 パンを食べたのは，女や子供を除いて，およそ五千人の男たちであった。 And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children.
22 すぐにイエスは，弟子たちを舟に乗り込ませ，向こう岸のベツサイダへ彼より先に行かせ，その間に自分は群衆を去らせた。 And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.
23 人々を去らせてから，祈るために自分だけで山へ上って行った。夕方になっても，ひとりでそこにいた。 And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.
24 他方，舟はすでに海の真ん中にあり，波に苦しめられていた。向かい風だったからである。 But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.
25 夜の第四見張り時に，イエスは海の上を歩きながら彼らに近づいて来た。 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.
26 弟子たちは彼が海の上を歩いているのを見て，「幽霊だ！」と言って動転し，恐れのあまり叫び声を上げた。 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.
27 しかし，イエスはすぐに彼らに話しかけ，彼らに言った，「しっかりしなさい。わたしはある！ 恐れることはない」。 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.
28 ペトロが彼に答えて言った，「主よ，あなたでしたら，水の上を歩いてあなたのもとに来るよう，わたしにお命じください」。 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.
29 彼は言った，「来なさい！」 ペトロは舟から降りて，水の上を歩いてイエスのほうへ行った。 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.
30 しかし風が強いのを見て，怖くなり，沈み始めた時，叫んで言った，「主よ，お救いください！」 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.
31 すぐにイエスは手を伸ばして彼をつかみ，彼に言った，「信仰の少ない者よ，なぜ疑ったのか」 。 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?
32 彼らが舟に乗り込むと，風はやんだ。 And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.
33 舟の中にいた者たちは近寄り，「確かにあなたは神の子です！」と言って，彼を拝んだ。 Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.
34 彼らが海を渡ると，ゲネサレトの地に着いた。 And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret.
35 その場所の人々は，彼だと分かると，周囲の地方全体に人を遣わし，病気の人たちをみな彼のもとに連れて来た。 And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased;
36 そして，その者たちにその衣の房べりにでも触らせてもらえるよう，彼に懇願した。そしてそれに触った者は皆健康になった。 And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.
