1 茲にヨセフその家宰に命じていふこの人々の嚢にその負うるほど糧食を充せ各人の金をその嚢の口に置れ And he commanded the steward of his house, saying, Fill the men’s sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put every man’s money in his sack’s mouth.
2 またわが杯すなはち銀の杯を彼の少き者の嚢の口に置てその穀物の金子とともにあらしめよと彼がヨセフがいひし言のごとくなせり And put my cup, the silver cup, in the sack’s mouth of the youngest, and his corn money. And he did according to the word that Joseph had spoken.
3 かくて夜のあくるにおよびてその人々と驢馬をかへしけるが As soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away, they and their asses.
4 かれら城邑をいでてなほ程とほからぬにヨセフ家宰にいひけるは起てかの人々の後を追ひおひつきし時之にいふべし汝らなんぞ惡をもて善にむくゆるや And when they were gone out of the city, and not yet far off, Joseph said unto his steward, Up, follow after the men; and when thou dost overtake them, say unto them, Wherefore have ye rewarded evil for good?
5 其はわが主がもちひて飮み又用ひて常に卜ふ者にあらずや汝らかくなすは惡しと Is not this it in which my lord drinketh, and whereby indeed he divineth? ye have done evil in so doing.
6 是に於て家宰かれらにおひつきてこの言をかれらにいひければ And he overtook them, and he spake unto them these same words.
7 かれら之にいふ主なにゆゑに是事をいひたまふや僕等きはめてこの事をなさず And they said unto him, Wherefore saith my lord these words? God forbid that thy servants should do according to this thing:
8 視よ我らの嚢の口にありし金はカナンの地より汝の所にもちかへれり然ば我等いかで汝の主の家より金銀をぬすまんや Behold, the money, which we found in our sacks’ mouths, we brought again unto thee out of the land of Canaan: how then should we steal out of thy lord’s house silver or gold?
9 僕等の中誰の手に見あたるも其者は死べし我等またわが主の奴隸となるべし With whomsoever of thy servants it be found, both let him die, and we also will be my lord’s bondmen.
10 彼いひけるはさらば汝らの言のごとくせん其の見あたりし者はわが奴隸となるべし汝等は咎なしと And he said, Now also let it be according unto your words: he with whom it is found shall be my servant; and ye shall be blameless.
11 是において彼等急ぎて各その嚢を地におろし各その嚢をひらきしかば Then they speedily took down every man his sack to the ground, and opened every man his sack.
12 彼すなはち索し長者よりはじめて少者にをはるに杯はベニヤミンの嚢にありき And he searched, and began at the eldest, and left at the youngest: and the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack.
13 斯有しかば彼等その衣を裂きおのおのその驢馬に荷を負せて邑にかへる Then they rent their clothes, and laded every man his ass, and returned to the city.
14 しかしてユダとその兄弟等ヨセフの家にいたるにヨセフなほ其處にをりしかばその前に地に伏す And Judah and his brethren came to Joseph’s house; for he was yet there: and they fell before him on the ground.
15 ヨセフかれらにいひけるは汝等がなしたるこの事は何ぞや我のごとき人は善く卜ひうる者なるをしらざるや And Joseph said unto them, What deed is this that ye have done? wot ye not that such a man as I can certainly divine?
16 ユダいひけるは我等主に何をいはんや何をのべんや如何にしてわれらの正直をあらはさんや神僕等の罪を摘發したまへり然ば我等およびこの杯の見あたりし者倶に主の奴隸となるべし And Judah said, What shall we say unto my lord? what shall we speak? or how shall we clear ourselves? God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants: behold, we are my lord’s servants, both we, and he also with whom the cup is found.
17 ヨセフいひけるはきはめて然せじ杯の手に見あたりし人はわが奴隸となるべし汝等は安然に父にかへりのぼるべし And he said, God forbid that I should do so: but the man in whose hand the cup is found, he shall be my servant; and as for you, get you up in peace unto your father.
18 時にユダかれに近よりていひけるはわが主よ請ふ僕をして主の耳に一言いふをえせしめよ僕にむかひて怒を發したまふなかれ汝はパロのごとくにいますなり Then Judah came near unto him, and said, Oh my lord, let thy servant, I pray thee, speak a word in my lord’s ears, and let not thine anger burn against thy servant: for thou art even as Pharaoh.
19 昔にわが主僕等に問て汝等は父あるや弟あるやといひたまひしかば My lord asked his servants, saying, Have ye a father, or a brother?
20 我等主にいへり我等にわが父あり老人なり又その老年子なる少者ありその兄は死てその母の遺せるは只是のみ故に父これを愛すと And we said unto my lord, We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loveth him.
21 汝また僕等にいひたまはく彼を我許につれくだり我をして之に目をつくることをえせしめよと And thou saidst unto thy servants, Bring him down unto me, that I may set mine eyes upon him.
22 われら主にいへり童子父を離るをえず若父をはなるるならば父死べしと And we said unto my lord, The lad cannot leave his father: for if he should leave his father, his father would die.
23 汝また僕等にいひたまはく汝らの季の弟汝等とともに下るにあらざれば汝等ふたたたびわが面を見るべからずと And thou saidst unto thy servants, Except your youngest brother come down with you, ye shall see my face no more.
24 我等すなはちなんぢの僕わが父の所にかへりのぼりて主の言をこれに告たり And it came to pass when we came up unto thy servant my father, we told him the words of my lord.
25 我らの父再びゆきて少許の糧食を買きたれといひければ And our father said, Go again, and buy us a little food.
26 我らいふ我らくだりゆくことをえずわれらの季の弟われらと共にあらば下りゆくべし其は季の弟われらと共にあるにあらざれば彼人の面をみるをえざればなりと And we said, We cannot go down: if our youngest brother be with us, then will we go down: for we may not see the man’s face, except our youngest brother be with us.
27 なんぢの僕わが父われらにいふ汝らのしるごとく吾妻われに二人を生しが And thy servant my father said unto us, Ye know that my wife bare me two sons:
28 その一人出てわれをはなれたれば必ず裂ころされしならんと思へり我今にいたるまで彼を見ず And the one went out from me, and I said, Surely he is torn in pieces; and I saw him not since:
29 なんぢら是をも我側より取ゆかんに若災害是の身におよぶあらば遂にわが白髮をして悲みて墓にくだらしむるにいたらんと And if ye take this also from me, and mischief befall him, ye shall bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.
30 抑父の生命と童子の生命とは相結びてあれば我なんぢの僕わが父に歸りいたらん時に童子もしわれらと共に在ずば如何ぞや Now therefore when I come to thy servant my father, and the lad be not with us; seeing that his life is bound up in the lad’s life;
31 父童子の在ざるを見ば死るにいたらん然れば僕等なんぢの僕われらの父の白髮をして悲みて墓にくだらしむるなり It shall come to pass, when he seeth that the lad is not with us, that he will die: and thy servants shall bring down the gray hairs of thy servant our father with sorrow to the grave.
32 僕わが父に童子の事を保ひて我もし是を汝につれかへらずば永久に罪を父に負んといへり For thy servant became surety for the lad unto my father, saying, If I bring him not unto thee, then I shall bear the blame to my father for ever.
33 されば請ふ僕をして童子にかはりをりて主の奴隸とならしめ童子をしてその兄弟とともに歸りのぼらしめたまへ Now therefore, I pray thee, let thy servant abide instead of the lad a bondman to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brethren.
34 我いかでか童子を伴はずして父の許に上りゆくべけん恐くは災害の父におよぶを見ん For how shall I go up to my father, and the lad be not with me? lest peradventure I see the evil that shall come on my father.
