1 茲にヤコブその途に進みしが神の使者これにあふ And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.
2 ヤコブこれを見て是は神の陣營なりといひてその處の名をマハナイム(二營)となづけたり And when Jacob saw them, he said, This is God’s host: and he called the name of that place Mahanaim.
3 かくてヤコブ己より前に使者をつかはしてセイルの地エドムの野にをる其兄エサウの所にいたらしむ And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom.
4 即ち之に命じて言ふ汝等かくわが主エサウにいふべし汝の僕ヤコブ斯いふ我ラバンの所に寄寓て今までとどまれり And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak unto my lord Esau; Thy servant Jacob saith thus, I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed there until now:
5 我牛驢馬羊僕婢あり人をつかはしてわが主に告ぐ汝の前に恩をえんことを願ふなりと And I have oxen, and asses, flocks, and menservants, and womenservants: and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.
6 使者ヤコブにかへりて言けるは我等汝の兄エサウの許に至れり彼四百人をしたがへて汝をむかへんとて來ると And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.
7 是によりヤコブ大におそれ且くるしみ己とともにある人衆および羊と牛と駱駝を二隊にわかちて Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands;
8 言けるはエサウもし一の隊に來りて之をうたば遺れるところの一隊逃るべし And said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company which is left shall escape.
9 ヤコブまた言けるはわが父アブラハムの神わが父イサクの神ヱホバよ汝甞て我につげて汝の國にかへり汝の親族に到れ我なんぢを善せんといひたまへり And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the Lord which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee:
10 我はなんぢが僕にほどこしたまひし恩惠と眞實を一も受るにたらざるなり我わが杖のみを持てこのヨルダンを濟りしが今は二隊とも成にいたれり I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.
11 願くはわが兄の手よりエサウの手より我をすくひいだしたまへ我彼をおそる恐くは彼きたりて我をうち母と子とに及ばん Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother with the children.
12 汝は甞て我かならず汝を惠み汝の子孫を濱の沙の多して數ふべからざるが如くなさんといひたまへりと And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.
13 彼その夜彼處に宿りその手にいりし物の中より兄エサウへの禮物をえらべり And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esau his brother;
14 即ち牝山羊二百牡山羊二十牝羊二百牡羊二十 Two hundred she goats, and twenty he goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams,
15 乳駱駝と其子三十牝牛四十牡牛十牝の驢馬二十驢馬の子十 Thirty milch camels with their colts, forty kine, and ten bulls, twenty she asses, and ten foals.
16 而して其群と群とをわかちて之を僕の手に授し僕にいひけるは吾に先ちて進み群と群との間を隔ておくべし And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves; and said unto his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space betwixt drove and drove.
17 又その前者に命じて言けるはわが兄エサウ汝にあひ汝に問て汝は誰の人にして何處にゆくや是汝のまへなる者は誰の所有なるやといはば And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and asketh thee, saying, Whose art thou? and whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee?
18 汝の僕ヤコブの所有にしてわが主エサウにたてまつる禮物なり視よ彼もわれらの後にをるといふべしと Then thou shalt say, They be thy servant Jacob’s; it is a present sent unto my lord Esau: and, behold, also he is behind us.
19 彼かく第二の者第三の者および凡て群々にしたがひゆく者に命じていふ汝等エサウにあふ時はかくの如く之にいふべし And so commanded he the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, On this manner shall ye speak unto Esau, when ye find him.
20 且汝等いへ視よなんぢの僕ヤコブわれらの後にをるとヤコブおもへらく我わが前におくる禮物をもて彼を和めて然るのち其面を觀ん然ば彼われを接遇ることあらんと And say ye moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept of me.
21 是によりて禮物かれに先ちて行く彼は其夜陣營の中に宿りしが So went the present over before him: and himself lodged that night in the company.
22 其夜おきいでて二人の妻と二人の仕女および十一人の子を導きてヤボクの渡をわたれり And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two womenservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok.
23 即ち彼等をみちびきて川を渉らしめ又その有る物を渡せり And he took them, and sent them over the brook, and sent over that he had.
24 而してヤコブ一人遺りしが人ありて夜の明るまで之と角力す And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.
25 其人己のヤコブに勝ざるを見てヤコブの髀の樞骨に觸しかばヤコブの髀の樞骨其人と角力する時挫離たり And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.
26 其人夜明んとすれば我をさらしめよといひければヤコブいふ汝われを祝せずばさらしめずと And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.
27 是に於て其人かれにいふ汝の名は何なるや彼いふヤコブなり And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.
28 其人いひけるは汝の名は重てヤコブととなふべからずイスラエルととなふべし其は汝神と人とに力をあらそひて勝たればなりと And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.
29 ヤコブ問て請ふ汝の名を告よといひければ其人何故にわが名をとふやといひて乃ち其處にて之を祝せり And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.
30 是を以てヤコブその處の名をベニエル(神の面)となづけて曰ふ我面と面をあはせて神とあひ見てわが生命なほ存るなりと And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.
31 斯て彼日のいづる時にベニエルを過たりしが其髀のために歩行はかどらざりき And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh.
32 是故にイスラエルの子孫は今日にいたるまで髀の樞の巨筋を食はず是彼人がヤコブの髀の巨筋に觸たるによりてなり Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew that shrank.
