1 王の心はヱホバの手の中にありて恰かも水の流れのごとし 彼その聖旨のままに之を導きたまふ The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will.
2 人の道はおのれの目に正しとみゆ されどヱホバは人の心をはかりたまふ Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the Lord pondereth the hearts.
3 正義と公平を行ふは犠牲よりも愈りてヱホバに悦ばる To do justice and judgment is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.
4 高ぶる目と驕る心とは惡人の光にしてただ罪のみ An high look, and a proud heart, and the plowing of the wicked, is sin.
5 勤めはたらく者の圖るところは遂にその身を豊裕ならしめ 凡てさわがしく急ぐ者は貧乏をいたす The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness; but of every one that is hasty only to want.
6 虚偽の舌をもて財を得るは吹はらはるる雲烟のごとし 之を求むる者は死を求むるなり The getting of treasures by a lying tongue is a vanity tossed to and fro of them that seek death.
7 惡者の殘虐は自己を亡す これ義しきを行ふことを好まざればなり The robbery of the wicked shall destroy them; because they refuse to do judgment.
8 罪人の道は曲り 潔者の行爲は直し The way of man is froward and strange: but as for the pure, his work is right.
9 相爭ふ婦と偕に室に居らんよりは屋蓋の隅にをるはよし It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman in a wide house.
10 惡者の霊魂は惡をねがふ その鄰も彼にあはれみ見られず The soul of the wicked desireth evil: his neighbour findeth no favour in his eyes.
11 あざけるもの罰をうくれば拙者は智慧を得 ちゑあるもの敎をうくれば知識を得 When the scorner is punished, the simple is made wise: and when the wise is instructed, he receiveth knowledge.
12 義しき神は惡者の家をみとめて惡者を滅亡に投いれたまふ The righteous man wisely considereth the house of the wicked: but God overthroweth the wicked for their wickedness.
13 耳を掩ひて貧者の呼ぶ聲をきかざる者は おのれ自ら呼ぶときもまた聽れざるべし Whoso stoppeth his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself, but shall not be heard.
14 潜なる饋物は忿恨をなだめ 懐中の賄賂は烈しき瞋恚をやはらぐ A gift in secret pacifieth anger: and a reward in the bosom strong wrath.
15 公義を行ふことは義者の喜樂にして 惡を行ふものの敗壞なり It is joy to the just to do judgment: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.
16 さとりの道を離るる人は死し者の集會の中にをらん The man that wandereth out of the way of understanding shall remain in the congregation of the dead.
17 宴樂を好むものは貧人となり 酒と膏とを好むものは富をいたさじ He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man: he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich.
18 惡者は義者のあがなひとなり 悖れる者は直き者に代る The wicked shall be a ransom for the righteous, and the transgressor for the upright.
19 爭ひ怒る婦と偕にをらんよりは荒野に居るはよし It is better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and an angry woman.
20 智慧ある者の家には貴き寳と膏とあり 愚なる人は之を呑つくす There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spendeth it up.
21 正義と憐憫と追求むる者は生命と正義と尊貴とを得べし He that followeth after righteousness and mercy findeth life, righteousness, and honour.
22 智慧ある者は強者の城にのぼりて その堅く賴むところを倒す A wise man scaleth the city of the mighty, and casteth down the strength of the confidence thereof.
23 口と舌とを守る者はその霊魂を守りて患難に遇せじ Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.
24 高ぶり驕る者を嘲笑者となづく これ驕奢を逞しくして行ふものなり Proud and haughty scorner is his name, who dealeth in proud wrath.
25 惰者の情慾はおのれの身を殺す 是はその手を肯て働かせざればなり The desire of the slothful killeth him; for his hands refuse to labour.
26 人は終日しきりに慾を圖る されど義者は與へて吝まず He coveteth greedily all the day long: but the righteous giveth and spareth not.
27 惡者の献物は憎まる 况て惡き事のために献ぐる者をや The sacrifice of the wicked is abomination: how much more, when he bringeth it with a wicked mind?
28 虚偽の證人は滅さる 然れど聽く人は恒にいふべし A false witness shall perish: but the man that heareth speaketh constantly.
29 惡人はその面を厚くし 義者はその道を謹む A wicked man hardeneth his face: but as for the upright, he directeth his way.
30 ヱホバにむかひては智慧も明哲も謀略もなすところなし There is no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against the Lord.
31 戰闘の日のために馬を備ふ されど勝利はヱホバによる The horse is prepared against the day of battle: but safety is of the Lord.
