1 然るに今は我よりも年少き者等われを笑ふ 彼等の父は我が賤しめて群の犬と並べ置くことをもせざりし者なり But now they that are younger than I have me in derision, whose fathers I would have disdained to have set with the dogs of my flock.
2 またかれらの手の力もわれに何の用をかなさん 彼らは其氣力すでに衰へたる者なり Yea, whereto might the strength of their hands profit me, in whom old age was perished?
3 かれらは缺乏と饑とによりて痩おとろへ 荒かつ廢れたる暗き野にて乾ける地を咬む For want and famine they were solitary; fleeing into the wilderness in former time desolate and waste.
4 すなはち灌木の中にて藜を摘み苕の根を食物となす Who cut up mallows by the bushes, and juniper roots for their meat.
5 彼らは人の中より逐いださる 盜賊を追ふがごとくに人かれらを追て呼はる They were driven forth from among men, (they cried after them as after a thief;)
6 彼等は懼ろしき谷に住み 土坑および磐穴に居り To dwell in the clifts of the valleys, in caves of the earth, and in the rocks.
7 灌木の中に嘶なき 荊棘の下に偃す Among the bushes they brayed; under the nettles they were gathered together.
8 彼らは愚蠢なる者の子 卑むべき者の子にして國より撃いださる They were children of fools, yea, children of base men: they were viler than the earth.
9 しかるに今は我かれらの歌謠に成り 彼らの嘲哢となれり And now am I their song, yea, I am their byword.
10 かれら我を厭ふて遠く我を離れ またわが面に唾することを辭まず They abhor me, they flee far from me, and spare not to spit in my face.
11 神わが綱を解て我をなやましたまへば彼等もわが前にその韁を縱せり Because he hath loosed my cord, and afflicted me, they have also let loose the bridle before me.
12 この輩わが右に起あがり わが足を推のけ我にむかひて滅亡の路を築く Upon my right hand rise the youth; they push away my feet, and they raise up against me the ways of their destruction.
13 彼らは自ら便なき者なれども尚わが逕を毀ち わが滅亡を促す They mar my path, they set forward my calamity, they have no helper.
14 かれらは石垣の大なる崩口より入がごとくに進み來り 破壞の中にてわが上に乗かかり They came upon me as a wide breaking in of waters: in the desolation they rolled themselves upon me.
15 懼ろしき事わが身に臨み 風のごとくに我が尊榮を吹はらふ わが福祿は雲のごとくに消失す Terrors are turned upon me: they pursue my soul as the wind: and my welfare passeth away as a cloud.
16 今はわが心われの衷に鎔て流れ 患難の日かたく我を執ふ And now my soul is poured out upon me; the days of affliction have taken hold upon me.
17 夜にいれば我骨刺れて身を離る わが身を噬む者つひに休むこと無し My bones are pierced in me in the night season: and my sinews take no rest.
18 わが疾病の大なる能によりてわが衣服は醜き樣に變り 裏衣の襟の如くに我身に固く附く By the great force of my disease is my garment changed: it bindeth me about as the collar of my coat.
19 神われを泥の中に投こみたまひて我は塵灰に等しくなれり He hath cast me into the mire, and I am become like dust and ashes.
20 われ汝にむかひて呼はるに汝答へたまはず 我立をるに 汝只われをながめ居たまふ I cry unto thee, and thou dost not hear me: I stand up, and thou regardest me not.
21 なんぢは我にむかひて無情なりたまひ 御手の能力をもて我を攻撃たまふ Thou art become cruel to me: with thy strong hand thou opposest thyself against me.
22 なんぢ我を擧げ風の上に乗て負去しめ 大風の音とともに消亡しめたまふ Thou liftest me up to the wind; thou causest me to ride upon it, and dissolvest my substance.
23 われ知る汝はわれを死に歸らしめ一切の生物の終に集る家に歸らしめたまはん For I know that thou wilt bring me to death, and to the house appointed for all living.
24 かれは必ず荒垤にむかひて手を舒たまふこと有じ 假令人滅亡に陷るとも是等の事のために號呼ぶことをせん Howbeit he will not stretch out his hand to the grave, though they cry in his destruction.
25 苦みて日を送る者のために我哭ざりしや 貧しき者のために我心うれへざりしや Did not I weep for him that was in trouble? was not my soul grieved for the poor?
26 われ吉事を望みしに凶事きたり 光明を待しに黑暗きたれり When I looked for good, then evil came unto me: and when I waited for light, there came darkness.
27 わが膓沸かへりて安からず 患難の日我に追及ぬ My bowels boiled, and rested not: the days of affliction prevented me.
28 われは日の光を蒙らずして哀しみつつ歩き 公會の中に立て助を呼もとむ I went mourning without the sun: I stood up, and I cried in the congregation.
29 われは山犬の兄弟となり 駝鳥の友となれり I am a brother to dragons, and a companion to owls.
30 わが皮は黑くなりて剥落ち わが骨は熱によりて焚け My skin is black upon me, and my bones are burned with heat.
31 わが琴は哀の音となり わが笛は哭の聲となれり My harp also is turned to mourning, and my organ into the voice of them that weep.
