1 是においてテマン人エリパズこたへて曰く Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,
2 人神を益する事をえんや 智人も唯みづから益する而已なるぞかし Can a man be profitable unto God, as he that is wise may be profitable unto himself?
3 なんぢ義かるとも全能者に何の歡喜かあらん なんぢ行爲を全たふするとも彼に何の利益かあらん Is it any pleasure to the Almighty, that thou art righteous? or is it gain to him, that thou makest thy ways perfect?
4 彼汝の畏懼の故によりて汝を責め汝を鞫きたまはんや Will he reprove thee for fear of thee? will he enter with thee into judgment?
5 なんぢの惡大なるにあらずや 汝の罪はきはまり無し Is not thy wickedness great? and thine iniquities infinite?
6 即はち汝は故なくその兄弟の物を抑へて質となし 裸なる者の衣服を剥て取り For thou hast taken a pledge from thy brother for nought, and stripped the naked of their clothing.
7 渇く者に水を與へて飮しめず 饑る者に食物を施こさず Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink, and thou hast withholden bread from the hungry.
8 力ある者土地を得 貴き者その中に住む But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; and the honourable man dwelt in it.
9 なんぢは寡婦に手を空しうして去しむ 孤子の腕は折る Thou hast sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.
10 是をもて網羅なんぢを環り 畏懼にはかに汝を擾す Therefore snares are round about thee, and sudden fear troubleth thee;
11 なんぢ黑暗を見ずや 洪水のなんぢを覆ふを見ずや Or darkness, that thou canst not see; and abundance of waters cover thee.
12 神は天の高に在すならずや 星辰の巓ああ如何に高きぞや Is not God in the height of heaven? and behold the height of the stars, how high they are!
13 是によりて汝は言ふ 神なにをか知しめさん 豈よく黑雲の中より審判するを得たまはんや And thou sayest, How doth God know? can he judge through the dark cloud?
14 濃雲かれを蔽へば彼は見たまふ所なし 唯天の蒼穹を歩みたまふ Thick clouds are a covering to him, that he seeth not; and he walketh in the circuit of heaven.
15 なんぢ古昔の世の道を行なはんとするや 是あしき人の踐たりし者ならずや Hast thou marked the old way which wicked men have trodden?
16 彼等は時いまだ至らざるに打絶れ その根基は大水に押流されたり Which were cut down out of time, whose foundation was overflown with a flood:
17 彼ら神に言けらく我儕を離れたまへ 全能者われらのために何を爲ことを得んと Which said unto God, Depart from us: and what can the Almighty do for them?
18 しかるに彼は却つて佳物を彼らの家に盈したまへり 但し惡人の計畫は我に與する所にあらず Yet he filled their houses with good things: but the counsel of the wicked is far from me.
19 義しき者は之を見て喜び 無辜者は彼らを笑ふ The righteous see it, and are glad: and the innocent laugh them to scorn.
20 曰く我らの仇は誠に滅ぼされ 其盈餘れる物は火にて焚つくさる Whereas our substance is not cut down, but the remnant of them the fire consumeth.
21 請ふ汝神と和らぎて平安を得よ 然らば福祿なんぢに來らん Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.
22 請ふかれの口より敎晦を受け その言語をなんぢの心に藏めよ Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart.
23 なんぢもし全能者に歸向り且なんぢの家より惡を除き去ば 汝の身再び興されん If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacles.
24 なんぢの寳を土の上に置き オフルの黄金を谿河の石の中に置け Then shalt thou lay up gold as dust, and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks.
25 然れば全能者なんぢの寳となり汝のために白銀となりたまふべし Yea, the Almighty shall be thy defence, and thou shalt have plenty of silver.
26 而してなんぢは又全能者を喜び且神にむかひて面をあげん For then shalt thou have thy delight in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face unto God.
27 なんぢ彼に祈らば彼なんぢに聽たまはん 而して汝その誓願をつくのひ果さん Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows.
28 なんぢ事を爲んと定めなばその事なんぢに成ん 汝の道には光照ん Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways.
29 其卑く降る時は汝いふ昇る哉と 彼は謙遜者を拯ひたまふべし When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person.
30 かれは罪なきに非ざる者をも拯ひたまはん 汝の手の潔淨によりて斯る者も拯はるべし He shall deliver the island of the innocent: and it is delivered by the pureness of thine hands.
