1 この後ユダヤ人の祭ありて、イエス、エルサレムに上り給ふ。 After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
2 エルサレムにある羊 門のほとりに、ヘブル語にてベテスダといふ池あり、之にそひて五つの廊あり。 Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches.
3 その内に病める者、盲人、跛者、痩せ衰へたる者ども夥多しく臥しゐたり。（水の動くを待てるなり。 In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.
4 それは御使のをりをり降りて水を動かすことあれば、その動きたるのち最先に池にいる者は、如何なる病にても癒ゆる故なり） For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.
5 爰に三十 八 年 病になやむ人ありしが、 And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.
6 イエスその臥し居るを見、かつその病の久しきを知り、之に『なんぢ癒えんことを願ふか』と言ひ給へば、 When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?
7 病める者こたふ『主よ、水の動くとき、我を池に入るる者なし、我が往くほどに、他の人さきだち下るなり』 The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.
8 イエス言ひ給ふ『起きよ、床を取りあげて歩め』 Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.
9 この人ただちに癒え、床を取りあげて歩めり。その日は安息 日に當りたれば、 And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.
10 ユダヤ人 醫されたる人にいふ『安息 日なり、床を取りあぐるは宜しからず』 The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.
11 答ふ『われを醫ししその人「床を取りあげて歩め」と云へり』 He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.
12 かれら問ふ『「取りあげて歩め」と言ひし人は誰なるか』 Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?
13 されど醫されし者は、その誰なるを知らざりき、そこに群衆ゐたればイエス退き給ひしに因る。 And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.
14 この後イエス宮にて彼に遇ひて言ひたまふ『視よ、なんぢ癒えたり。再び罪を犯すな、恐らくは更に大なる惡しきこと汝に起らん』 Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.
15 この人ゆきてユダヤ人に、おのれを醫したる者のイエスなるを告ぐ。 The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole.
16 ここにユダヤ人、かかる事を安息 日になすとて、イエスを責めたれば、 And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.
17 イエス答へ給ふ『わが父は今にいたるまで働き給ふ、我もまた働くなり』 But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.
18 此に由りてユダヤ人いよいよイエスを殺さんと思ふ。それは安息 日を破るのみならず、神を我が父といひて、己を神と等しき者になし給ひし故なり。 Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.
19 イエス答へて言ひ給ふ『まことに誠に汝らに告ぐ、子は父のなし給ふことを見て行ふほかは、自ら何事をも爲し得ず、父のなし給ふことは子もまた同じく爲すなり。 Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.
20 父は子を愛して、その爲す所をことごとく子に示したまふ。また更に大なる業を示し給はん、汝 等をして怪しましめん爲なり。 For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.
21 父の死にし者を起して活し給ふごとく、子もまた己が欲する者を活すなり。 For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.
22 父は誰をも審き給はず、審判をさへみな子に委ね給へり。 For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:
23 これ凡ての人の父を敬ふごとくに子を敬はん爲なり。子を敬はぬ者は、之を遣し給ひし父をも敬はぬなり。 That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.
24 誠にまことに汝らに告ぐ、わが言をききて我を遣し給ひし者を信ずる人は、永遠の生命をもち、かつ審判に至らず、死より生命に移れるなり。 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
25 誠にまことに汝らに告ぐ、死にし人、神の子の聲をきく時きたらん、今すでに來れり、而して聞く人は活くべし。 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.
26 これ父みづから生命を有ち給ふごとく、子にも自ら生命を有つことを得させ、 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;
27 また人の子たるに因りて、審判する權を與へ給ひしなり。 And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.
28 汝ら之を怪しむな、墓にある者みな神の子の聲をききて出づる時きたらん。 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,
29 善をなしし者は生命に甦へり、惡を行ひし者は審判に甦へるべし。 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.
30 我みづから何事もなし能はず、ただ聞くままに審くなり。わが審判は正し、それは我が意を求めずして、我を遣し給ひし者の御意を求むるに因る。 I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.
31 我もし己につきて證せば、我が證は眞ならず。 If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.
32 我につきて證する者は他にあり、その我につきて證する證の眞なるを我は知る。 There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.
33 なんぢら前に人をヨハネに遣ししに、彼は眞につきて證せり。 Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth.
34 我は人よりの證を受くる事をせねど、唯なんぢらの救はれん爲に之を言ふ。 But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved.
35 かれは燃えて輝く燈火なりしが、汝 等その光にありて暫時よろこぶ事をせり。 He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.
36 されど我にはヨハネの證よりも大なる證あり。父の我にあたへて成し遂げしめ給ふわざ、即ち我がおこなふ業は、我につきて父の我を遣し給ひたるを證し、 But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.
37 また我をおくり給ひし父も、我につきて證し給へり。汝らは未だその御聲を聞きし事なく、その御形を見し事なし。 And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.
38 その御言は汝らの衷にとどまらず、その遣し給ひし者を信ぜぬに因りて知らるるなり。 And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.
39 汝らは聖書に永遠の生命ありと思ひて之を査ぶ、されどこの聖書は我につきて證するものなり。 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
40 然るに汝ら生命を得んために我に來るを欲せず。 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.
41 我は人よりの譽をうくる事をせず、 I receive not honour from men.
42 ただ汝らの衷に神を愛する事なきを知る。 But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.
43 我はわが父の名によりて來りしに、汝 等われを受けず、もし他の人おのれの名によりて來らば之を受けん。 I am come in my Father’s name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.
44 互に譽をうけて、唯一の神よりの譽を求めぬ汝らは、爭で信ずることを得んや。 How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?
45 われ父に汝らを訴へんとすと思ふな、訴ふるもの一人あり、汝らが頼とするモーセなり。 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust.
46 若しモーセを信ぜしならば、我を信ぜしならん、彼は我につきて録したればなり。 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.
47 されど彼の書を信ぜずば、爭で我が言を信ぜんや』 But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?
