1 愛する者よ、われ今この第二の書を汝らに書き贈り、第一なると之とをもて汝らに思ひ出させ、その潔よき心を勵まし、 This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance:
2 聖なる預言者たちの預じめ云ひし言、および汝らの使徒たちの傳へし主なる救主の誡命を憶えさせんとす。 That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour:
3 汝 等まづ知れ、末の世には嘲る者 嘲笑をもて來り、おのが慾に隨ひて歩み、 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,
4 かつ言はん『主の來りたまふ約束は何處にありや、先祖たちの眠りしのち、萬のもの開闢の初と等しくして變らざるなり』と。 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.
5 彼らは殊更に次の事を知らざるなり、即ち古へ神の言によりて天あり、地は水より出で水によりて成立ちしが、 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:
6 その時の世は之により水に淹はれて滅びたり。 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:
7 されど同じ御言によりて今の天と地とは蓄へられ、火にて燒かれん爲に、敬虔ならぬ人々の審判と滅亡との日まで保たるるなり。 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
8 愛する者よ、なんぢら此の一事を忘るな。主の御前には一日は千年のごとく、千年は一日のごとし。 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
9 主その約束を果すに遲きは、或 人の遲しと思ふが如きにあらず、ただ一人の亡ぶるをも望み給はず、凡ての人の悔改に至らんことを望みて汝らを永く忍び給ふなり。 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
10 されど主の日は盜人のごとく來らん、その日には天とどろきて去り、もろもろの天體は燒け崩れ、地とその中にある工とは燒け盡きん。 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
11 かく此 等のものはみな崩るべければ、汝 等いかに潔き行状と敬虔とをもて、 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,
12 神の日の來るを待ち之を速かにせんことを勉むべきにあらずや、その日には天 燃え崩れ、もろもろの天體 燒け溶けん。 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?
13 されど我らは神の約束によりて、義の住むところの新しき天と新しき地とを待つ。 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.
14 この故に愛する者よ、汝 等これを待てば、神の前に汚點なく瑕なく安然に在らんことを勉めよ。 Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.
15 且われらの主の寛容を救なりと思へ、これは我らの愛する兄弟パウロも、その與へられたる智慧にしたがひ曾て汝らに書き贈りし如し。 And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;
16 彼はその凡ての書にも此 等のことに就きて語る、その中には悟りがたき所あり、無學のもの心の定らぬ者は、他の聖書のごとく之をも強ひ釋きて自ら滅亡を招くなり。 As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.
17 されば愛する者よ、なんぢら預じめ之を知れば、愼みて無法の者の迷にさそはれて己が堅き心を失はず、 Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.
18 ますます我らの主なる救主イエス・キリストの恩寵と主を知る知識とに進め。願はくは今および永遠の日までも榮光かれに在らんことを。 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.
