1 汝らに對し面前にては謙だり、離れゐては勇ましき我パウロ、自らキリストの柔和と寛容とをもて汝らに勸む。 Now I Paul myself beseech you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, who in presence am base among you, but being absent am bold toward you:
2 我らを肉に從ひて歩むごとく思ふ者あれば、斯かる者に對しては雄々しくせんと思へど、願ふ所は我が汝らに逢ふとき斯く勇ましくせざらん事なり。 But I beseech you, that I may not be bold when I am present with that confidence, wherewith I think to be bold against some, which think of us as if we walked according to the flesh.
3 我らは肉にありて歩めども、肉に從ひて戰はず。 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:
4 それ我らの戰爭の武器は肉に屬するにあらず、神の前には城砦を破るほどの能力あり、我等はもろもろの論説を破り、 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
5 神の示教に逆ひて建てたる凡ての櫓を毀ち、凡ての念を虜にしてキリストに服はしむ。 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
6 且なんぢらの從順の全くならん時、すべての不 從順を罰せんと覺悟せり。 And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.
7 汝らは外貌のみを見る、若し人みづからキリストに屬する者と信ぜば、己がキリストに屬する如く、我らも亦キリストに屬する者なることを更に考ふべし。 Do ye look on things after the outward appearance? If any man trust to himself that he is Christ’s, let him of himself think this again, that, as he is Christ’s, even so are we Christ’s.
8 假令われ汝らを破る爲ならずして建つる爲に、主が我らに賜ひたる權威につきて誇ること稍 過ぐとも恥とはならじ。 For though I should boast somewhat more of our authority, which the Lord hath given us for edification, and not for your destruction, I should not be ashamed:
9 われ書をもて汝らを嚇すと思はざれ。 That I may not seem as if I would terrify you by letters.
10 彼らは言ふ『その書は重くかつ強し、その逢ふときの容貌は弱く、言は鄙し』と。 For his letters, say they, are weighty and powerful; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible.
11 斯くのごとき人は思ふべし。我らが離れをる時おくる書の言のごとく、逢ふときの行爲も亦 然るを。 Let such an one think this, that, such as we are in word by letters when we are absent, such will we be also in deed when we are present.
12 我らは己を譽むる人と敢へて竝び、また較ぶる事をせず、彼らは己によりて己を度り、己をもて己に較ぶれば智なき者なり。 For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.
13 我らは範圍を踰えて誇らず、神の我らに分ち賜ひたる範圍にしたがひて誇らん。その範圍は汝らに及べり。 But we will not boast of things without our measure, but according to the measure of the rule which God hath distributed to us, a measure to reach even unto you.
14 汝らに及ばぬ者のごとく範圍を踰えて身を延すに非ず、キリストの福音を傳へて汝らにまで到れるなり。 For we stretch not ourselves beyond our measure, as though we reached not unto you: for we are come as far as to you also in preaching the gospel of Christ:
15 我らは己が範圍を踰えて他の人の勞を誇らず、唯なんぢらの信仰の彌増すにより、我らの範圍に循ひて汝らのうちに更に大ならんことを望む。 Not boasting of things without our measure, that is, of other men’s labours; but having hope, when your faith is increased, that we shall be enlarged by you according to our rule abundantly,
16 これ他の人の範圍に既に備りたるものを誇らず、汝らを踰えて外の處に福音を宣傳へん爲なり。 To preach the gospel in the regions beyond you, and not to boast in another man’s line of things made ready to our hand.
17 誇る者は主によりて誇るべし。 But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.
18 そは是とせらるるは己を譽むる者にあらず、主の譽め給ふ者なればなり。 For not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth.
