Every high priest is chosen from his fellow-men and appointed to serve God on their behalf, to offer sacrifices and offerings for sins. | For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins:
Since he himself is weak in many ways, he is able to be gentle with those who are ignorant and make mistakes. | Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity.
And because he is himself weak, he must offer sacrifices not only for the sins of the people but also for his own sins. | And by reason hereof he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins.
No one chooses for himself the honor of being a high priest. It is only by God's call that a man is made a high priest—just as Aaron was. | And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.
In the same way, Christ did not take upon himself the honor of being a high priest. Instead, God said to him, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father.” | So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.
He also said in another place, “You will be a priest forever, in the priestly order of Melchizedek.” | As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
In his life on earth Jesus made his prayers and requests with loud cries and tears to God, who could save him from death. Because he was humble and devoted, God heard him. | Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared;
But even though he was God's Son, he learned through his sufferings to be obedient. | Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;
When he was made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all those who obey him, | And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;
and God declared him to be high priest, in the priestly order of Melchizedek. | Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec.
Warning against Abandoning the Faith There is much we have to say about this matter, but it is hard to explain to you, because you are so slow to understand.
Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing. |
There has been enough time for you to be teachers—yet you still need someone to teach you the first lessons of God's message. Instead of eating solid food, you still have to drink milk. | For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.
Anyone who has to drink milk is still a child, without any experience in the matter of right and wrong. | For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.
Solid food, on the other hand, is for adults, who through practice are able to distinguish between good and evil. | But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
