God's Covenant with Abram
After this, Abram had a vision and heard the Lord say to him, “Do not be afraid, Abram. I will shield you from danger and give you a great reward.”
After these things the word of the Lord came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.
But Abram answered, “Sovereign Lord, what good will your reward do me, since I have no children? My only heir is Eliezer of Damascus. And Abram said, Lord God, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus?
You have given me no children, and one of my slaves will inherit my property.” And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir.
Then he heard the Lord speaking to him again: “This slave Eliezer will not inherit your property; your own son will be your heir.” And, behold, the word of the Lord came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.
The Lord took him outside and said, “Look at the sky and try to count the stars; you will have as many descendants as that.” And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.
Abram put his trust in the Lord, and because of this the Lord was pleased with him and accepted him. And he believed in the Lord; and he counted it to him for righteousness.
Then the Lord said to him, “I am the Lord, who led you out of Ur in Babylonia, to give you this land as your own.” And he said unto him, I am the Lord that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit it.
But Abram asked, “Sovereign Lord, how can I know that it will be mine?” And he said, Lord God, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it?
He answered, “Bring me a cow, a goat, and a ram, each of them three years old, and a dove and a pigeon.” And he said unto him, Take me an heifer of three years old, and a she goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon.
Abram brought the animals to God, cut them in half, and placed the halves opposite each other in two rows; but he did not cut up the birds. And he took unto him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each piece one against another: but the birds divided he not.
Vultures came down on the bodies, but Abram drove them off. And when the fowls came down upon the carcases, Abram drove them away.
When the sun was going down, Abram fell into a deep sleep, and fear and terror came over him. And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him.
The Lord said to him, “Your descendants will be strangers in a foreign land; they will be slaves there and will be treated cruelly for four hundred years. And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years;
But I will punish the nation that enslaves them, and when they leave that foreign land, they will take great wealth with them. And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.
You yourself will live to a ripe old age, die in peace, and be buried. And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age.
It will be four generations before your descendants come back here, because I will not drive out the Amorites until they become so wicked that they must be punished.” But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full.
When the sun had set and it was dark, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch suddenly appeared and passed between the pieces of the animals. And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces.
Then and there the Lord made a covenant with Abram. He said, “I promise to give your descendants all this land from the border of Egypt to the Euphrates River, In the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:
including the lands of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites,
the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, And the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims,
the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.” And the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.
