Life Is Useless These are the words of the Philosopher, David's son, who was king in Jerusalem.
The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem. |
It is useless, useless, said the Philosopher. Life is useless, all useless. | Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.
You spend your life working, laboring, and what do you have to show for it? | What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?
Generations come and generations go, but the world stays just the same. | One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.
The sun still rises, and it still goes down, going wearily back to where it must start all over again. | The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.
The wind blows south, the wind blows north—round and round and back again. | The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits.
Every river flows into the sea, but the sea is not yet full. The water returns to where the rivers began, and starts all over again. | All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.
Everything leads to weariness—a weariness too great for words. Our eyes can never see enough to be satisfied; our ears can never hear enough. | All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.
What has happened before will happen again. What has been done before will be done again. There is nothing new in the whole world. | The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.
“Look,” they say, “here is something new!” But no, it has all happened before, long before we were born. | Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.
No one remembers what has happened in the past, and no one in days to come will remember what happens between now and then. | There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.
The Philosopher's Experience I, the Philosopher, have been king over Israel in Jerusalem.
I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem. |
I determined that I would examine and study all the things that are done in this world. God has laid a miserable fate upon us. | And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith.
I have seen everything done in this world, and I tell you, it is all useless. It is like chasing the wind. | I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.
You can't straighten out what is crooked; you can't count things that aren't there. | That which is crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.
I told myself, “I have become a great man, far wiser than anyone who ruled Jerusalem before me. I know what wisdom and knowledge really are.” | I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem: yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.
I was determined to learn the difference between knowledge and foolishness, wisdom and madness. But I found out that I might as well be chasing the wind. | And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.
The wiser you are, the more worries you have; the more you know, the more it hurts. | For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.
