Advice to the Young
My child, don't forget what I teach you. Always remember what I tell you to do.
My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments:
My teaching will give you a long and prosperous life. For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.
Never let go of loyalty and faithfulness. Tie them around your neck; write them on your heart. Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:
If you do this, both God and people will be pleased with you. So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Never rely on what you think you know. Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
Remember the Lord in everything you do, and he will show you the right way. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
Never let yourself think that you are wiser than you are; simply obey the Lord and refuse to do wrong. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil.
If you do, it will be like good medicine, healing your wounds and easing your pains. It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.
Honor the Lord by making him an offering from the best of all that your land produces. Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:
If you do, your barns will be filled with grain, and you will have too much wine to store it all. So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.
My child, when the Lord corrects you, pay close attention and take it as a warning. My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord; neither be weary of his correction:
The Lord corrects those he loves, as parents correct a child of whom they are proud. For whom the Lord loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.
Happy is anyone who becomes wise—who comes to have understanding. Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.
There is more profit in it than there is in silver; it is worth more to you than gold. For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold.
Wisdom is more valuable than jewels; nothing you could want can compare with it. She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.
Wisdom offers you long life, as well as wealth and honor. Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour.
Wisdom can make your life pleasant and lead you safely through it. Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.
Those who become wise are happy; wisdom will give them life. She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.
The Lord created the earth by his wisdom; by his knowledge he set the sky in place. The Lord by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens.
His wisdom caused the rivers to flow and the clouds to give rain to the earth. By his knowledge the depths are broken up, and the clouds drop down the dew.
My child, hold on to your wisdom and insight. Never let them get away from you. My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion:
They will provide you with life—a pleasant and happy life. So shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck.
You can go safely on your way and never even stumble. Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble.
You will not be afraid when you go to bed, and you will sleep soundly through the night. When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.
You will not have to worry about sudden disasters, such as come on the wicked like a storm. Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh.
The Lord will keep you safe. He will not let you fall into a trap. For the Lord shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken.
Whenever you possibly can, do good to those who need it. Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it.
Never tell your neighbors to wait until tomorrow if you can help them now. Say not unto thy neighbour, Go, and come again, and to morrow I will give; when thou hast it by thee.
Don't plan anything that will hurt your neighbors; they live beside you, trusting you. Devise not evil against thy neighbour, seeing he dwelleth securely by thee.
Don't argue with others for no reason when they have never done you any harm. Strive not with a man without cause, if he have done thee no harm.
Don't be jealous of violent people or decide to act as they do, Envy thou not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways.
because the Lord hates people who do evil, but he takes righteous people into his confidence. For the froward is abomination to the Lord: but his secret is with the righteous.
The Lord puts a curse on the homes of the wicked, but blesses the homes of the righteous. The curse of the Lord is in the house of the wicked: but he blesseth the habitation of the just.
He has no use for conceited people, but shows favor to those who are humble. Surely he scorneth the scorners: but he giveth grace unto the lowly.
Wise people will gain an honorable reputation, but stupid people will only add to their own disgrace. The wise shall inherit glory: but shame shall be the promotion of fools.
