— | Furthermore Elihu answered and said,
You men are so wise, so clever; listen now to what I am saying. | Hear my words, O ye wise men; and give ear unto me, ye that have knowledge.
You know good food when you taste it, but not wise words when you hear them. | For the ear trieth words, as the mouth tasteth meat.
It is up to us to decide the case. | Let us choose to us judgment: let us know among ourselves what is good.
Job claims that he is innocent, that God refuses to give him justice. | For Job hath said, I am righteous: and God hath taken away my judgment.
He asks, “How could I lie and say I am wrong? I am fatally wounded, but I am sinless.” | Should I lie against my right? my wound is incurable without transgression.
Have you ever seen anyone like this man Job? He never shows respect for God. | What man is like Job, who drinketh up scorning like water?
He likes the company of evil people and goes around with sinners. | Which goeth in company with the workers of iniquity, and walketh with wicked men.
He says that it never does any good to try to follow God's will. | For he hath said, It profiteth a man nothing that he should delight himself with God.
Listen to me, you men who understand! Will Almighty God do what is wrong? | Therefore hearken unto me, ye men of understanding: far be it from God, that he should do wickedness; and from the Almighty, that he should commit iniquity.
He rewards people for what they do and treats them as they deserve. | For the work of a man shall he render unto him, and cause every man to find according to his ways.
Almighty God does not do evil; he is never unjust to anyone. | Yea, surely God will not do wickedly, neither will the Almighty pervert judgment.
Did God get his power from someone else? Did someone put him in charge of the world? | Who hath given him a charge over the earth? or who hath disposed the whole world?
If God took back the breath of life, | If he set his heart upon man, if he gather unto himself his spirit and his breath;
then everyone living would die and turn into dust again. | All flesh shall perish together, and man shall turn again unto dust.
Now listen to me, if you are wise. | If now thou hast understanding, hear this: hearken to the voice of my words.
Are you condemning the righteous God? Do you think that he hates justice? | Shall even he that hateth right govern? and wilt thou condemn him that is most just?
God condemns kings and rulers when they are worthless or wicked. | Is it fit to say to a king, Thou art wicked? and to princes, Ye are ungodly?
He does not take the side of rulers nor favor the rich over the poor, for he created everyone. | How much less to him that accepteth not the persons of princes, nor regardeth the rich more than the poor? for they all are the work of his hands.
We may suddenly die at night. God strikes us down and we perish; he kills the mighty with no effort at all. | In a moment shall they die, and the people shall be troubled at midnight, and pass away: and the mighty shall be taken away without hand.
He watches every step we take. | For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he seeth all his goings.
There is no darkness dark enough to hide a sinner from God. | There is no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.
God does not need to set a time for us to go and be judged by him. | For he will not lay upon man more than right; that he should enter into judgment with God.
He does not need an investigation to remove leaders and replace them with others. | He shall break in pieces mighty men without number, and set others in their stead.
Because he knows what they do; he overthrows them and crushes them by night. | Therefore he knoweth their works, and he overturneth them in the night, so that they are destroyed.
He punishes sinners where all can see it, | He striketh them as wicked men in the open sight of others;
because they have stopped following him and ignored all his commands. | Because they turned back from him, and would not consider any of his ways:
They forced the poor to cry out to God, and he heard their calls for help. | So that they cause the cry of the poor to come unto him, and he heareth the cry of the afflicted.
If God decided to do nothing at all, no one could criticize him. If he hid his face, we would be helpless. | When he giveth quietness, who then can make trouble? and when he hideth his face, who then can behold him? whether it be done against a nation, or against a man only:
There would be nothing that nations could do to keep godless oppressors from ruling them. | That the hypocrite reign not, lest the people be ensnared.
Job, have you confessed your sins to God and promised not to sin again? | Surely it is meet to be said unto God, I have borne chastisement, I will not offend any more:
Have you asked God to show you your faults, and have you agreed to stop doing evil? | That which I see not teach thou me: if I have done iniquity, I will do no more.
Since you object to what God does, can you expect him to do what you want? The decision is yours, not mine; tell us now what you think. | Should it be according to thy mind? he will recompense it, whether thou refuse, or whether thou choose; and not I: therefore speak what thou knowest.
Any sensible person will surely agree; and the wise who hear me will say | Let men of understanding tell me, and let a wise man hearken unto me.
that Job is speaking from ignorance and that nothing he says makes sense. | Job hath spoken without knowledge, and his words were without wisdom.
Think through everything that Job says; you will see that he talks like an evil man. | My desire is that Job may be tried unto the end because of his answers for wicked men.
To his sins he adds rebellion; in front of us all he mocks God. | For he addeth rebellion unto his sin, he clappeth his hands among us, and multiplieth his words against God.
