|---|---|---|
I have made a solemn promise never to look with lust at a woman. | I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?
What does Almighty God do to us? How does he repay human deeds? | For what portion of God is there from above? and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high?
He sends disaster and ruin to those who do wrong. | Is not destruction to the wicked? and a strange punishment to the workers of iniquity?
God knows everything I do; he sees every step I take. | Doth not he see my ways, and count all my steps?
I swear I have never acted wickedly and never tried to deceive others. | If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot hath hasted to deceit;
Let God weigh me on honest scales, and he will see how innocent I am. | Let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know mine integrity.
If I have turned from the right path or let myself be attracted to evil, if my hands are stained with sin, | If my step hath turned out of the way, and mine heart walked after mine eyes, and if any blot hath cleaved to mine hands;
then let my crops be destroyed, or let others eat the food I grow. | Then let me sow, and let another eat; yea, let my offspring be rooted out.
If I have been attracted to my neighbor's wife, and waited, hidden, outside her door, | If mine heart have been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbour’s door;
then let my wife cook another man's food and sleep in another man's bed. | Then let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her.
Such wickedness should be punished by death. | For this is an heinous crime; yea, it is an iniquity to be punished by the judges.
It would be like a destructive, hellish fire, consuming everything I have. | For it is a fire that consumeth to destruction, and would root out all mine increase.
When any of my servants complained against me, I would listen and treat them fairly. | If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me;
If I did not, how could I then face God? What could I say when God came to judge me? | What then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?
The same God who created me created my servants also. | Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb?
I have never refused to help the poor; never have I let widows live in despair | If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail;
or let orphans go hungry while I ate. | Or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof;
All my life I have taken care of them. | (For from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided her from my mother’s womb;)
When I found someone in need, too poor to buy clothes, | If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering;
I would give him clothing made of wool that had come from my own flock of sheep. Then he would praise me with all his heart. | If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;
If I have ever cheated an orphan, knowing I could win in court, | If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate:
then may my arms be broken; may they be torn from my shoulders. | Then let mine arm fall from my shoulder blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone.
Because I fear God's punishment, I could never do such a thing. | For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure.
I have never trusted in riches | If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;
or taken pride in my wealth. | If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because mine hand had gotten much;
I have never worshiped the sun in its brightness or the moon in all its beauty. | If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness;
I have not been led astray to honor them by kissing my hand in reverence to them. | And my heart hath been secretly enticed, or my mouth hath kissed my hand:
Such a sin should be punished by death; it denies Almighty God. | This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above.
I have never been glad when my enemies suffered, or pleased when they met with disaster; | If I rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him:
I never sinned by praying for their death. | Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul.
All those who work for me know that I have always welcomed strangers. | If the men of my tabernacle said not, Oh that we had of his flesh! we cannot be satisfied.
I invited travelers into my home and never let them sleep in the streets. | The stranger did not lodge in the street: but I opened my doors to the traveller.
Others try to hide their sins, but I have never concealed mine. | If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom:
I have never feared what people would say; I have never kept quiet or stayed indoors because I feared their scorn. | Did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of the door?
Will no one listen to what I am saying? I swear that every word is true. Let Almighty God answer me. If the charges my opponent brings against me were written down so that I could see them, | Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that mine adversary had written a book.
I would wear them proudly on my shoulder and place them on my head like a crown. | Surely I would take it upon my shoulder, and bind it as a crown to me.
I would tell God everything I have done, and hold my head high in his presence. | I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him.
If I have stolen the land I farm and taken it from its rightful owners— | If my land cry against me, or that the furrows likewise thereof complain;
if I have eaten the food that grew there but let the farmers that grew it starve— | If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:
then instead of wheat and barley, may weeds and thistles grow. The words of Job are ended. | Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.
