Job's Final Statement of His Case Job began speaking again.
Moreover Job continued his parable, and said, |
Job If only my life could once again be as it was when God watched over me.
Oh that I were as in months past, as in the days when God preserved me; |
God was always with me then and gave me light as I walked through the darkness. | When his candle shined upon my head, and when by his light I walked through darkness;
Those were the days when I was prosperous, and the friendship of God protected my home. | As I was in the days of my youth, when the secret of God was upon my tabernacle;
Almighty God was with me then, and I was surrounded by all my children. | When the Almighty was yet with me, when my children were about me;
My cows and goats gave plenty of milk, and my olive trees grew in the rockiest soil. | When I washed my steps with butter, and the rock poured me out rivers of oil;
Whenever the city elders met and I took my place among them, | When I went out to the gate through the city, when I prepared my seat in the street!
young men stepped aside as soon as they saw me, and old men stood up to show me respect. | The young men saw me, and hid themselves: and the aged arose, and stood up.
The leaders of the people would stop talking; | The princes refrained talking, and laid their hand on their mouth.
even the most important men kept silent. | The nobles held their peace, and their tongue cleaved to the roof of their mouth.
Everyone who saw me or heard of me had good things to say about what I had done. | When the ear heard me, then it blessed me; and when the eye saw me, it gave witness to me:
When the poor cried out, I helped them; I gave help to orphans who had nowhere to turn. | Because I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, and him that had none to help him.
People who were in deepest misery praised me, and I helped widows find security. | The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me: and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy.
I have always acted justly and fairly. | I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my judgment was as a robe and a diadem.
I was eyes for the blind, and feet for the lame. | I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame.
I was like a father to the poor and took the side of strangers in trouble. | I was a father to the poor: and the cause which I knew not I searched out.
I destroyed the power of cruel men and rescued their victims. | And I brake the jaws of the wicked, and plucked the spoil out of his teeth.
I always expected to live a long life and to die at home in comfort. | Then I said, I shall die in my nest, and I shall multiply my days as the sand.
I was like a tree whose roots always have water and whose branches are wet with dew. | My root was spread out by the waters, and the dew lay all night upon my branch.
Everyone was always praising me, and my strength never failed me. | My glory was fresh in me, and my bow was renewed in my hand.
When I gave advice, people were silent and listened carefully to what I said; | Unto me men gave ear, and waited, and kept silence at my counsel.
they had nothing to add when I had finished. My words sank in like drops of rain; | After my words they spake not again; and my speech dropped upon them.
everyone welcomed them just as farmers welcome rain in spring. | And they waited for me as for the rain; and they opened their mouth wide as for the latter rain.
I smiled on them when they had lost confidence; my cheerful face encouraged them. | If I laughed on them, they believed it not; and the light of my countenance they cast not down.
I took charge and made the decisions; I led them as a king leads his troops, and gave them comfort in their despair. | I chose out their way, and sat chief, and dwelt as a king in the army, as one that comforteth the mourners.
