|---|---|---|
We are all born weak and helpless. All lead the same short, troubled life. | Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.
We grow and wither as quickly as flowers; we disappear like shadows. | He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.
Will you even look at me, God, or put me on trial and judge me? | And dost thou open thine eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with thee?
Nothing clean can ever come from anything as unclean as human beings. | Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.
The length of our lives is decided beforehand— the number of months we will live. You have settled it, and it can't be changed. | Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;
Look away from us and leave us alone; let us enjoy our hard life—if we can. | Turn from him, that he may rest, till he shall accomplish, as an hireling, his day.
There is hope for a tree that has been cut down; it can come back to life and sprout. | For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.
Even though its roots grow old, and its stump dies in the ground, | Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground;
with water it will sprout like a young plant. | Yet through the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant.
But we die, and that is the end of us; we die, and where are we then? | But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?
Like rivers that stop running, and lakes that go dry, | As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up:
people die, never to rise. They will never wake up while the sky endures; they will never stir from their sleep. | So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.
I wish you would hide me in the world of the dead; let me be hidden until your anger is over, and then set a time to remember me. | O that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!
If a man dies, can he come back to life? But I will wait for better times, wait till this time of trouble is ended. | If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.
Then you will call, and I will answer, and you will be pleased with me, your creature. | Thou shalt call, and I will answer thee: thou wilt have a desire to the work of thine hands.
Then you will watch every step I take, but you will not keep track of my sins. | For now thou numberest my steps: dost thou not watch over my sin?
You will forgive them and put them away; you will wipe out all the wrongs I have done. | My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and thou sewest up mine iniquity.
There comes a time when mountains fall and solid cliffs are moved away. | And surely the mountain falling cometh to nought, and the rock is removed out of his place.
Water will wear down rocks, and heavy rain will wash away the soil; so you destroy our hope for life. | The waters wear the stones: thou washest away the things which grow out of the dust of the earth; and thou destroyest the hope of man.
You overpower us and send us away forever; our faces are twisted in death. | Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth: thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.
Our children win honor, but we never know it, nor are we told when they are disgraced. | His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them.
We feel only the pain of our own bodies and the grief of our own minds. | But his flesh upon him shall have pain, and his soul within him shall mourn.
