“I have told you this, so that you will not give up your faith. | These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended.
You will be expelled from the synagogues, and the time will come when those who kill you will think that by doing this they are serving God. | They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.
People will do these things to you because they have not known either the Father or me. | And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.
But I have told you this, so that when the time comes for them to do these things, you will remember what I told you. “I did not tell you these things at the beginning, for I was with you. | But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.
The Work of the Holy Spirit But now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me where I am going.
But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou? |
And now that I have told you, your hearts are full of sadness. | But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.
But I am telling you the truth: it is better for you that I go away, because if I do not go, the Helper will not come to you. But if I do go away, then I will send him to you. | Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
And when he comes, he will prove to the people of the world that they are wrong about sin and about what is right and about God's judgment. | And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
They are wrong about sin, because they do not believe in me; | Of sin, because they believe not on me;
they are wrong about what is right, because I am going to the Father and you will not see me any more; | Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;
and they are wrong about judgment, because the ruler of this world has already been judged. | Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
“I have much more to tell you, but now it would be too much for you to bear. | I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.
When, however, the Spirit comes, who reveals the truth about God, he will lead you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own authority, but he will speak of what he hears and will tell you of things to come. | Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
He will give me glory, because he will take what I say and tell it to you. | He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
All that my Father has is mine; that is why I said that the Spirit will take what I give him and tell it to you. | All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
Sadness and Gladness “In a little while you will not see me any more, and then a little while later you will see me.”
A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father. |
Some of his disciples asked among themselves, “What does this mean? He tells us that in a little while we will not see him, and then a little while later we will see him; and he also says, ‘It is because I am going to the Father.’ | Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?
What does this ‘a little while’ mean? We don't know what he is talking about!” | They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith.
Jesus knew that they wanted to question him, so he said to them, “I said, ‘In a little while you will not see me, and then a little while later you will see me.’ Is this what you are asking about among yourselves? | Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye enquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me?
I am telling you the truth: you will cry and weep, but the world will be glad; you will be sad, but your sadness will turn into gladness. | Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.
When a woman is about to give birth, she is sad because her hour of suffering has come; but when the baby is born, she forgets her suffering, because she is happy that a baby has been born into the world. | A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.
That is how it is with you: now you are sad, but I will see you again, and your hearts will be filled with gladness, the kind of gladness that no one can take away from you. | And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.
“When that day comes, you will not ask me for anything. I am telling you the truth: the Father will give you whatever you ask of him in my name. | And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.
Until now you have not asked for anything in my name; ask and you will receive, so that your happiness may be complete. | Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.
Victory over the World “I have used figures of speech to tell you these things. But the time will come when I will not use figures of speech, but will speak to you plainly about the Father.
These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father. |
When that day comes, you will ask him in my name; and I do not say that I will ask him on your behalf, | At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you:
for the Father himself loves you. He loves you because you love me and have believed that I came from God. | For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.
I did come from the Father, and I came into the world; and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father.” | I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.
Then his disciples said to him, “Now you are speaking plainly, without using figures of speech. | His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb.
We know now that you know everything; you do not need to have someone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God.” | Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God.
Jesus answered them, “Do you believe now? | Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe?
The time is coming, and is already here, when all of you will be scattered, each of you to your own home, and I will be left all alone. But I am not really alone, because the Father is with me. | Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
I have told you this so that you will have peace by being united to me. The world will make you suffer. But be brave! I have defeated the world!” | These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
