Jesus Washes His Disciples' Feet It was now the day before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. He had always loved those in the world who were his own, and he loved them to the very end.
Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end. |
Jesus and his disciples were at supper. The Devil had already put into the heart of Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, the thought of betraying Jesus. | And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him;
Jesus knew that the Father had given him complete power; he knew that he had come from God and was going to God. | Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God;
So he rose from the table, took off his outer garment, and tied a towel around his waist. | He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself.
Then he poured some water into a washbasin and began to wash the disciples' feet and dry them with the towel around his waist. | After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.
He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Are you going to wash my feet, Lord?” | Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?
Jesus answered him, “You do not understand now what I am doing, but you will understand later.” | Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.
Peter declared, “Never at any time will you wash my feet!” “If I do not wash your feet,” Jesus answered, “you will no longer be my disciple.” | Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.
Simon Peter answered, “Lord, do not wash only my feet, then! Wash my hands and head, too!” | Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.
Jesus said, “Those who have taken a bath are completely clean and do not have to wash themselves, except for their feet. All of you are clean—all except one.” ( | Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.
Jesus already knew who was going to betray him; that is why he said, “All of you, except one, are clean.”) | For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.
After Jesus had washed their feet, he put his outer garment back on and returned to his place at the table. “Do you understand what I have just done to you?” he asked. | So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?
“You call me Teacher and Lord, and it is right that you do so, because that is what I am. | Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.
I, your Lord and Teacher, have just washed your feet. You, then, should wash one another's feet. | If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.
I have set an example for you, so that you will do just what I have done for you. | For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.
I am telling you the truth: no slaves are greater than their master, and no messengers are greater than the one who sent them. | Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.
Now that you know this truth, how happy you will be if you put it into practice! | If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.
“I am not talking about all of you; I know those I have chosen. But the scripture must come true that says, ‘The man who shared my food turned against me.’ | I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me.
I tell you this now before it happens, so that when it does happen, you will believe that ‘I Am Who I Am.’ | Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he.
I am telling you the truth: whoever receives anyone I send receives me also; and whoever receives me receives him who sent me.” (; ; ) | Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.
Jesus Predicts His Betrayal After Jesus had said this, he was deeply troubled and declared openly, “I am telling you the truth: one of you is going to betray me.”
When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me. |
The disciples looked at one another, completely puzzled about whom he meant. | Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake.
One of the disciples, the one whom Jesus loved, was sitting next to Jesus. | Now there was leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.
Simon Peter motioned to him and said, “Ask him whom he is talking about.” | Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake.
So that disciple moved closer to Jesus' side and asked, “Who is it, Lord?” | He then lying on Jesus’ breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it?
Jesus answered, “I will dip some bread in the sauce and give it to him; he is the man.” So he took a piece of bread, dipped it, and gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. | Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.
As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, “Hurry and do what you must!” | And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.
None of the others at the table understood why Jesus said this to him. | Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him.
Since Judas was in charge of the money bag, some of the disciples thought that Jesus had told him to go and buy what they needed for the festival, or to give something to the poor. | For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor.
Judas accepted the bread and went out at once. It was night. | He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.
The New Commandment After Judas had left, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man's glory is revealed; now God's glory is revealed through him.
Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him. |
And if God's glory is revealed through him, then God will reveal the glory of the Son of Man in himself, and he will do so at once. | If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him.
My children, I shall not be with you very much longer. You will look for me; but I tell you now what I told the Jewish authorities, ‘You cannot go where I am going.’ | Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you.
And now I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. | A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
If you have love for one another, then everyone will know that you are my disciples.” (; ; ) | By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
Jesus Predicts Peter's Denial “Where are you going, Lord?” Simon Peter asked him. “You cannot follow me now where I am going,” answered Jesus; “but later you will follow me.”
Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards. |
“Lord, why can't I follow you now?” asked Peter. “I am ready to die for you!” | Peter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake.
Jesus answered, “Are you really ready to die for me? I am telling you the truth: before the rooster crows you will say three times that you do not know me. | Jesus answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.
