|---|---|---|
Friendship with the World Where do all the fights and quarrels among you come from? They come from your desires for pleasure, which are constantly fighting within you.
From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members? |
You want things, but you cannot have them, so you are ready to kill; you strongly desire things, but you cannot get them, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have what you want because you do not ask God for it. | Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.
And when you ask, you do not receive it, because your motives are bad; you ask for things to use for your own pleasures. | Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.
Unfaithful people! Don't you know that to be the world's friend means to be God's enemy? If you want to be the world's friend, you make yourself God's enemy. | Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
Don't think that there is no truth in the scripture that says, “The spirit that God placed in us is filled with fierce desires.” | Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?
But the grace that God gives is even stronger. As the scripture says, “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” | But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.
So then, submit yourselves to God. Resist the Devil, and he will run away from you. | Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Come near to God, and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners! Purify your hearts, you hypocrites! | Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
Be sorrowful, cry, and weep; change your laughter into crying, your joy into gloom! | Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.
Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. | Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.
Warning against Judging One Another Do not criticize one another, my friends. If you criticize or judge another Christian, you criticize and judge the Law. If you judge the Law, then you are no longer one who obeys the Law, but one who judges it.
Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge. |
God is the only lawgiver and judge. He alone can save and destroy. Who do you think you are, to judge someone else? | There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?
Warning against Boasting Now listen to me, you that say, “Today or tomorrow we will travel to a certain city, where we will stay a year and go into business and make a lot of money.”
Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: |
You don't even know what your life tomorrow will be! You are like a puff of smoke, which appears for a moment and then disappears. | Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.
What you should say is this: “If the Lord is willing, we will live and do this or that.” | For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.
But now you are proud, and you boast; all such boasting is wrong. | But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.
So then, if we do not do the good we know we should do, we are guilty of sin. | Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.
