Warning against Prejudice My friends, as believers in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, you must never treat people in different ways according to their outward appearance.
My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons. |
Suppose a rich man wearing a gold ring and fine clothes comes to your meeting, and a poor man in ragged clothes also comes. | For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment;
If you show more respect to the well-dressed man and say to him, “Have this best seat here,” but say to the poor man, “Stand over there, or sit here on the floor by my feet,” | And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool:
then you are guilty of creating distinctions among yourselves and of making judgments based on evil motives. | Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?
Listen, my dear friends! God chose the poor people of this world to be rich in faith and to possess the kingdom which he promised to those who love him. | Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?
But you dishonor the poor! Who are the ones who oppress you and drag you before the judges? The rich! | But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats?
They are the ones who speak evil of that good name which has been given to you. | Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called?
You will be doing the right thing if you obey the law of the Kingdom, which is found in the scripture, “Love your neighbor as you love yourself.” | If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:
But if you treat people according to their outward appearance, you are guilty of sin, and the Law condemns you as a lawbreaker. | But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.
Whoever breaks one commandment is guilty of breaking them all. | For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.
For the same one who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not commit murder.” Even if you do not commit adultery, you have become a lawbreaker if you commit murder. | For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.
Speak and act as people who will be judged by the law that sets us free. | So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.
For God will not show mercy when he judges the person who has not been merciful; but mercy triumphs over judgment. | For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.
Faith and Actions My friends, what good is it for one of you to say that you have faith if your actions do not prove it? Can that faith save you?
What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? |
Suppose there are brothers or sisters who need clothes and don't have enough to eat. | If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,
What good is there in your saying to them, “God bless you! Keep warm and eat well!”—if you don't give them the necessities of life? | And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?
So it is with faith: if it is alone and includes no actions, then it is dead. | Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
But someone will say, “One person has faith, another has actions.” My answer is, “Show me how anyone can have faith without actions. I will show you my faith by my actions.” | Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.
Do you believe that there is only one God? Good! The demons also believe—and tremble with fear. | Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
You fool! Do you want to be shown that faith without actions is useless? | But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
How was our ancestor Abraham put right with God? It was through his actions, when he offered his son Isaac on the altar. | Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
Can't you see? His faith and his actions worked together; his faith was made perfect through his actions. | Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?
And the scripture came true that said, “Abraham believed God, and because of his faith God accepted him as righteous.” And so Abraham was called God's friend. | And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.
You see, then, that it is by our actions that we are put right with God, and not by our faith alone. | Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
It was the same with the prostitute Rahab. She was put right with God through her actions, by welcoming the Israelite spies and helping them to escape by a different road. | Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?
So then, as the body without the spirit is dead, also faith without actions is dead. | For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
