The Share of the Priests “The priestly tribe of Levi is not to receive any share of land in Israel; instead, they are to live on the offerings and other sacrifices given to the Lord.
The priests the Levites, and all the tribe of Levi, shall have no part nor inheritance with Israel: they shall eat the offerings of the Lord made by fire, and his inheritance. |
They are to own no land, as the other tribes do; their share is the privilege of being the Lord's priests, as the Lord has promised. | Therefore shall they have no inheritance among their brethren: the Lord is their inheritance, as he hath said unto them.
“Whenever cattle or sheep are sacrificed, the priests are to be given the shoulder, the jaw, and the stomach. | And this shall be the priest’s due from the people, from them that offer a sacrifice, whether it be ox or sheep; and they shall give unto the priest the shoulder, and the two cheeks, and the maw.
They are to receive the first share of the grain, wine, olive oil, and wool. | The firstfruit also of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the first of the fleece of thy sheep, shalt thou give him.
The Lord chose from all your tribes the tribe of Levi to serve him as priests forever. | For the Lord thy God hath chosen him out of all thy tribes, to stand to minister in the name of the Lord, him and his sons for ever.
“Any Levite who wants to may come from any town in Israel to the one place of worship | And if a Levite come from any of thy gates out of all Israel, where he sojourned, and come with all the desire of his mind unto the place which the Lord shall choose;
and may serve there as a priest of the Lord his God, like the other Levites who are serving there. | Then he shall minister in the name of the Lord his God, as all his brethren the Levites do, which stand there before the Lord.
He is to receive the same amount of food as the other priests, and he may keep whatever his family sends him. | They shall have like portions to eat, beside that which cometh of the sale of his patrimony.
Warning against Pagan Practices “When you come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you, don't follow the disgusting practices of the nations that are there.
When thou art come into the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations. |
Don't sacrifice your children in the fires on your altars; and don't let your people practice divination or look for omens or use spells | There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch,
or charms, and don't let them consult the spirits of the dead. | Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.
The Lord your God hates people who do these disgusting things, and that is why he is driving those nations out of the land as you advance. | For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord: and because of these abominations the Lord thy God doth drive them out from before thee.
Be completely faithful to the Lord.” | Thou shalt be perfect with the Lord thy God.
The Promise to Send a Prophet Then Moses said, “In the land you are about to occupy, people follow the advice of those who practice divination and look for omens, but the Lord your God does not allow you to do this.
For these nations, which thou shalt possess, hearkened unto observers of times, and unto diviners: but as for thee, the Lord thy God hath not suffered thee so to do. |
Instead, he will send you a prophet like me from among your own people, and you are to obey him. | The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;
“On the day that you were gathered at Mount Sinai, you begged not to hear the Lord speak again or to see his fiery presence any more, because you were afraid you would die. | According to all that thou desiredst of the Lord thy God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, Let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not.
So the Lord said to me, ‘They have made a wise request. | And the Lord said unto me, They have well spoken that which they have spoken.
I will send them a prophet like you from among their own people; I will tell him what to say, and he will tell the people everything I command. | I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.
He will speak in my name, and I will punish anyone who refuses to obey him. | And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.
But if any prophet dares to speak a message in my name when I did not command him to do so, he must die for it, and so must any prophet who speaks in the name of other gods.’ | But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.
“You may wonder how you can tell when a prophet's message does not come from the Lord. | And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the Lord hath not spoken?
If a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord and what he says does not come true, then it is not the Lord's message. That prophet has spoken on his own authority, and you are not to fear him. | When a prophet speaketh in the name of the Lord, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.
