A Prayer for Forgiveness
Be merciful to me, O God, because of your constant love. Because of your great mercy wipe away my sins!
Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.
Wash away all my evil and make me clean from my sin! Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
I recognize my faults; I am always conscious of my sins. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.
I have sinned against you—only against you— and done what you consider evil. So you are right in judging me; you are justified in condemning me. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.
I have been evil from the day I was born; from the time I was conceived, I have been sinful. Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.
Sincerity and truth are what you require; fill my mind with your wisdom. Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.
Remove my sin, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
Let me hear the sounds of joy and gladness; and though you have crushed me and broken me, I will be happy once again. Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.
Close your eyes to my sins and wipe out all my evil. Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.
Create a pure heart in me, O God, and put a new and loyal spirit in me. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
Do not banish me from your presence; do not take your holy spirit away from me. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.
Give me again the joy that comes from your salvation, and make me willing to obey you. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.
Then I will teach sinners your commands, and they will turn back to you. Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.
Spare my life, O God, and save me, and I will gladly proclaim your righteousness. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.
Help me to speak, Lord, and I will praise you. O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise.
You do not want sacrifices, or I would offer them; you are not pleased with burnt offerings. For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering.
My sacrifice is a humble spirit, O God; you will not reject a humble and repentant heart. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
O God, be kind to Zion and help her; rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem.
Then you will be pleased with proper sacrifices and with our burnt offerings; and bulls will be sacrificed on your altar. Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar.
