BOOK FIVE / In Praise of God's Goodness
“Give thanks to the Lord, because he is good; his love is eternal!”
O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.
Repeat these words in praise to the Lord, all you whom he has saved. He has rescued you from your enemies Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy;
and has brought you back from foreign countries, from east and west, from north and south. And gathered them out of the lands, from the east, and from the west, from the north, and from the south.
Some wandered in the trackless desert and could not find their way to a city to live in. They wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way; they found no city to dwell in.
They were hungry and thirsty and had given up all hope. Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them.
Then in their trouble they called to the Lord, and he saved them from their distress. Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses.
He led them by a straight road to a city where they could live. And he led them forth by the right way, that they might go to a city of habitation.
They must thank the Lord for his constant love, for the wonderful things he did for them. Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
He satisfies those who are thirsty and fills the hungry with good things. For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.
Some were living in gloom and darkness, prisoners suffering in chains, Such as sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron;
because they had rebelled against the commands of Almighty God and had rejected his instructions. Because they rebelled against the words of God, and contemned the counsel of the most High:
They were worn out from hard work; they would fall down, and no one would help. Therefore he brought down their heart with labour; they fell down, and there was none to help.
Then in their trouble they called to the Lord, and he saved them from their distress. Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses.
He brought them out of their gloom and darkness and broke their chains in pieces. He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and brake their bands in sunder.
They must thank the Lord for his constant love, for the wonderful things he did for them. Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
He breaks down doors of bronze and smashes iron bars. For he hath broken the gates of brass, and cut the bars of iron in sunder.
Some were fools, suffering because of their sins and because of their evil; Fools because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted.
they couldn't stand the sight of food and were close to death. Their soul abhorreth all manner of meat; and they draw near unto the gates of death.
Then in their trouble they called to the Lord, and he saved them from their distress. Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he saveth them out of their distresses.
He healed them with his command and saved them from the grave. He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.
They must thank the Lord for his constant love, for the wonderful things he did for them. Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
They must thank him with sacrifices, and with songs of joy must tell all that he has done. And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing.
Some sailed over the ocean in ships, earning their living on the seas. They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters;
They saw what the Lord can do, his wonderful acts on the seas. These see the works of the Lord, and his wonders in the deep.
He commanded, and a mighty wind began to blow and stirred up the waves. For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves thereof.
The ships were lifted high in the air and plunged down into the depths. In such danger the sailors lost their courage; They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths: their soul is melted because of trouble.
they stumbled and staggered like drunks— all their skill was useless. They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wits’ end.
Then in their trouble they called to the Lord, and he saved them from their distress. Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses.
He calmed the raging storm, and the waves became quiet. He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still.
They were glad because of the calm, and he brought them safe to the port they wanted. Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven.
They must thank the Lord for his constant love, for the wonderful things he did for them. Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
They must proclaim his greatness in the assembly of the people and praise him before the council of the leaders. Let them exalt him also in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders.
The Lord made rivers dry up completely and stopped springs from flowing. He turneth rivers into a wilderness, and the watersprings into dry ground;
He made rich soil become a salty wasteland because of the wickedness of those who lived there. A fruitful land into barrenness, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein.
He changed deserts into pools of water and dry land into flowing springs. He turneth the wilderness into a standing water, and dry ground into watersprings.
He let hungry people settle there, and they built a city to live in. And there he maketh the hungry to dwell, that they may prepare a city for habitation;
They sowed the fields and planted grapevines and reaped an abundant harvest. And sow the fields, and plant vineyards, which may yield fruits of increase.
He blessed his people, and they had many children; he kept their herds of cattle from decreasing. He blesseth them also, so that they are multiplied greatly; and suffereth not their cattle to decrease.
When God's people were defeated and humiliated by cruel oppression and suffering, Again, they are minished and brought low through oppression, affliction, and sorrow.
he showed contempt for their oppressors and made them wander in trackless deserts. He poureth contempt upon princes, and causeth them to wander in the wilderness, where there is no way.
But he rescued the needy from their misery and made their families increase like flocks. Yet setteth he the poor on high from affliction, and maketh him families like a flock.
The righteous see this and are glad, but all the wicked are put to silence. The righteous shall see it, and rejoice: and all iniquity shall stop her mouth.
May those who are wise think about these things; may they consider the Lord's constant love. Whoso is wise, and will observe these things, even they shall understand the lovingkindness of the Lord.
