The Coming of the Holy Spirit When the day of Pentecost came, all the believers were gathered together in one place.
And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. |
Suddenly there was a noise from the sky which sounded like a strong wind blowing, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. | And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
Then they saw what looked like tongues of fire which spread out and touched each person there. | And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to talk in other languages, as the Spirit enabled them to speak. | And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
There were Jews living in Jerusalem, religious people who had come from every country in the world. | And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
When they heard this noise, a large crowd gathered. They were all excited, because all of them heard the believers talking in their own languages. | Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
In amazement and wonder they exclaimed, “These people who are talking like this are Galileans! | And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galileans?
How is it, then, that all of us hear them speaking in our own native languages? | And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?
We are from Parthia, Media, and Elam; from Mesopotamia, Judea, and Cappadocia; from Pontus and Asia, | Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia,
from Phrygia and Pamphylia, from Egypt and the regions of Libya near Cyrene. Some of us are from Rome, | Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,
both Jews and Gentiles converted to Judaism, and some of us are from Crete and Arabia—yet all of us hear them speaking in our own languages about the great things that God has done!” | Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.
Amazed and confused, they kept asking each other, “What does this mean?” | And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this?
But others made fun of the believers, saying, “These people are drunk!” | Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine.
Peter's Message Then Peter stood up with the other eleven apostles and in a loud voice began to speak to the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, listen to me and let me tell you what this means.
But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words: |
These people are not drunk, as you suppose; it is only nine o'clock in the morning. | For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day.
Instead, this is what the prophet Joel spoke about: | But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;
‘This is what I will do in the last days, God says: I will pour out my Spirit on everyone. Your sons and daughters will proclaim my message; your young men will see visions, and your old men will have dreams. | And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:
Yes, even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will proclaim my message. | And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:
I will perform miracles in the sky above and wonders on the earth below. There will be blood, fire, and thick smoke; | And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke:
the sun will be darkened, and the moon will turn red as blood, before the great and glorious Day of the Lord comes. | The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come:
And then, whoever calls out to the Lord for help will be saved.’ | And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
“Listen to these words, fellow Israelites! Jesus of Nazareth was a man whose divine authority was clearly proven to you by all the miracles and wonders which God performed through him. You yourselves know this, for it happened here among you. | Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:
In accordance with his own plan God had already decided that Jesus would be handed over to you; and you killed him by letting sinful men crucify him. | Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:
But God raised him from death, setting him free from its power, because it was impossible that death should hold him prisoner. | Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.
For David said about him, ‘I saw the Lord before me at all times; he is near me, and I will not be troubled. | For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved:
And so I am filled with gladness, and my words are full of joy. And I, mortal though I am, will rest assured in hope, | Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope:
because you will not abandon me in the world of the dead; you will not allow your faithful servant to rot in the grave. | Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
You have shown me the paths that lead to life, and your presence will fill me with joy.’ | Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance.
“My friends, I must speak to you plainly about our famous ancestor King David. He died and was buried, and his grave is here with us to this very day. | Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day.
He was a prophet, and he knew what God had promised him: God had made a vow that he would make one of David's descendants a king, just as David was. | Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne;
David saw what God was going to do in the future, and so he spoke about the resurrection of the Messiah when he said, ‘He was not abandoned in the world of the dead; his body did not rot in the grave.’ | He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.
God has raised this very Jesus from death, and we are all witnesses to this fact. | This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.
He has been raised to the right side of God, his Father, and has received from him the Holy Spirit, as he had promised. What you now see and hear is his gift that he has poured out on us. | Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.
For it was not David who went up into heaven; rather he said, ‘The Lord said to my Lord: Sit here at my right side | For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,
until I put your enemies as a footstool under your feet.’ | Until I make thy foes thy footstool.
“All the people of Israel, then, are to know for sure that this Jesus, whom you crucified, is the one that God has made Lord and Messiah!” | Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.
When the people heard this, they were deeply troubled and said to Peter and the other apostles, “What shall we do, brothers?” | Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?
Peter said to them, “Each one of you must turn away from your sins and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, so that your sins will be forgiven; and you will receive God's gift, the Holy Spirit. | Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
For God's promise was made to you and your children, and to all who are far away—all whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” | For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
Peter made his appeal to them and with many other words he urged them, saying, “Save yourselves from the punishment coming on this wicked people!” | And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.
Many of them believed his message and were baptized, and about three thousand people were added to the group that day. | Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
They spent their time in learning from the apostles, taking part in the fellowship, and sharing in the fellowship meals and the prayers. | And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
Life among the Believers Many miracles and wonders were being done through the apostles, and everyone was filled with awe.
And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. |
All the believers continued together in close fellowship and shared their belongings with one another. | And all that believed were together, and had all things common;
They would sell their property and possessions, and distribute the money among all, according to what each one needed. | And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.
Day after day they met as a group in the Temple, and they had their meals together in their homes, eating with glad and humble hearts, | And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,
praising God, and enjoying the good will of all the people. And every day the Lord added to their group those who were being saved. | Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.
