More Persecution
About this time King Herod began to persecute some members of the church.
Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church.
2 He had James, the brother of John, put to death by the sword. And he killed James the brother of John with the sword.
3 When he saw that this pleased the Jews, he went ahead and had Peter arrested. (This happened during the time of the Festival of Unleavened Bread.) And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened bread.)
4 After his arrest Peter was put in jail, where he was handed over to be guarded by four groups of four soldiers each. Herod planned to put him on trial in public after Passover. And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people.
5 So Peter was kept in jail, but the people of the church were praying earnestly to God for him. Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.

Peter Is Set Free from Prison
The night before Herod was going to bring him out to the people, Peter was sleeping between two guards. He was tied with two chains, and there were guards on duty at the prison gate.
And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison.
7 Suddenly an angel of the Lord stood there, and a light shone in the cell. The angel shook Peter by the shoulder, woke him up, and said, “Hurry! Get up!” At once the chains fell off Peter's hands. And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.
8 Then the angel said, “Tighten your belt and put on your sandals.” Peter did so, and the angel said, “Put your cloak around you and come with me.” And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me.
9 Peter followed him out of the prison, not knowing, however, if what the angel was doing was real; he thought he was seeing a vision. And he went out, and followed him; and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he saw a vision.
10 They passed by the first guard station and then the second, and came at last to the iron gate that opens into the city. The gate opened for them by itself, and they went out. They walked down a street, and suddenly the angel left Peter. When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him.
11 Then Peter realized what had happened to him, and said, “Now I know that it is really true! The Lord sent his angel to rescue me from Herod's power and from everything the Jewish people expected to happen.” And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.
12 Aware of his situation, he went to the home of Mary, the mother of John Mark, where many people had gathered and were praying. And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying.
13 Peter knocked at the outside door, and a servant named Rhoda came to answer it. And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a damsel came to hearken, named Rhoda.
14 She recognized Peter's voice and was so happy that she ran back in without opening the door, and announced that Peter was standing outside. And when she knew Peter’s voice, she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in, and told how Peter stood before the gate.
15 “You are crazy!” they told her. But she insisted that it was true. So they answered, “It is his angel.” And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel.
16 Meanwhile Peter kept on knocking. At last they opened the door, and when they saw him, they were amazed. But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished.
17 He motioned with his hand for them to be quiet, and he explained to them how the Lord had brought him out of prison. “Tell this to James and the rest of the believers,” he said; then he left and went somewhere else. But he, beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace, declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Go shew these things unto James, and to the brethren. And he departed, and went into another place.
18 When morning came, there was a tremendous confusion among the guards—what had happened to Peter? Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers, what was become of Peter.
19 Herod gave orders to search for him, but they could not find him. So he had the guards questioned and ordered them put to death. After this, Herod left Judea and spent some time in Caesarea. And when Herod had sought for him, and found him not, he examined the keepers, and commanded that they should be put to death. And he went down from Judea to Cesarea, and there abode.

The Death of Herod
Herod was very angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon, so they went in a group to see him. First they convinced Blastus, the man in charge of the palace, that he should help them. Then they went to Herod and asked him for peace, because their country got its food supplies from the king's country.
And Herod was highly displeased with them of Tyre and Sidon: but they came with one accord to him, and, having made Blastus the king’s chamberlain their friend, desired peace; because their country was nourished by the king’s country.
21 On a chosen day Herod put on his royal robes, sat on his throne, and made a speech to the people. And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them.
22 “It isn't a man speaking, but a god!” they shouted. And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man.
23 At once the angel of the Lord struck Herod down, because he did not give honor to God. He was eaten by worms and died. And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.
24 Meanwhile the word of God continued to spread and grow. But the word of God grew and multiplied.
25 Barnabas and Saul finished their mission and returned from Jerusalem, taking John Mark with them. And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem, when they had fulfilled their ministry, and took with them John, whose surname was Mark.
