The Plot against Jesus When Jesus had finished teaching all these things, he said to his disciples,
And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said unto his disciples, |
“In two days, as you know, it will be the Passover Festival, and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.” | Ye know that after two days is the feast of the passover, and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified.
Then the chief priests and the elders met together in the palace of Caiaphas, the High Priest, | Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas,
and made plans to arrest Jesus secretly and put him to death. | And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill him.
“We must not do it during the festival,” they said, “or the people will riot.” (; ) | But they said, Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar among the people.
Jesus Is Anointed at Bethany Jesus was in Bethany at the house of Simon, a man who had suffered from a dreaded skin disease.
Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, |
While Jesus was eating, a woman came to him with an alabaster jar filled with an expensive perfume, which she poured on his head. | There came unto him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head, as he sat at meat.
The disciples saw this and became angry. “Why all this waste?” they asked. | But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this waste?
“This perfume could have been sold for a large amount and the money given to the poor!” | For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor.
Jesus knew what they were saying, and so he said to them, “Why are you bothering this woman? It is a fine and beautiful thing that she has done for me. | When Jesus understood it, he said unto them, Why trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon me.
You will always have poor people with you, but you will not always have me. | For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always.
What she did was to pour this perfume on my body to get me ready for burial. | For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial.
Now, I assure you that wherever this gospel is preached all over the world, what she has done will be told in memory of her.” (,; ) | Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her.
Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus Then one of the twelve disciples—the one named Judas Iscariot—went to the chief priests
Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests, |
and asked, “What will you give me if I betray Jesus to you?” They counted out thirty silver coins and gave them to him. | And said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver.
From then on Judas was looking for a good chance to hand Jesus over to them. (; ,; ) | And from that time he sought opportunity to betray him.
Jesus Eats the Passover Meal with His Disciples On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus and asked him, “Where do you want us to get the Passover meal ready for you?”
Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the passover? |
“Go to a certain man in the city,” he said to them, “and tell him: ‘The Teacher says, My hour has come; my disciples and I will celebrate the Passover at your house.’” | And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master saith, My time is at hand; I will keep the passover at thy house with my disciples.
The disciples did as Jesus had told them and prepared the Passover meal. | And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them; and they made ready the passover.
When it was evening, Jesus and the twelve disciples sat down to eat. | Now when the even was come, he sat down with the twelve.
During the meal Jesus said, “I tell you, one of you will betray me.” | And as they did eat, he said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.
The disciples were very upset and began to ask him, one after the other, “Surely, Lord, you don't mean me?” | And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I?
Jesus answered, “One who dips his bread in the dish with me will betray me. | And he answered and said, He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me.
The Son of Man will die as the Scriptures say he will, but how terrible for that man who will betray the Son of Man! It would have been better for that man if he had never been born!” | The Son of man goeth as it is written of him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born.
Judas, the traitor, spoke up. “Surely, Teacher, you don't mean me?” he asked. Jesus answered, “So you say.” (; ; ) | Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He said unto him, Thou hast said.
The Lord's Supper While they were eating, Jesus took a piece of bread, gave a prayer of thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples. “Take and eat it,” he said; “this is my body.”
And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. |
Then he took a cup, gave thanks to God, and gave it to them. “Drink it, all of you,” he said; | And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;
“this is my blood, which seals God's covenant, my blood poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. | For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
I tell you, I will never again drink this wine until the day I drink the new wine with you in my Father's Kingdom.” | But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.
Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives. (; ; ) | And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.
Jesus Predicts Peter's Denial Then Jesus said to them, “This very night all of you will run away and leave me, for the scripture says, ‘God will kill the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’
Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad. |
But after I am raised to life, I will go to Galilee ahead of you.” | But after I am risen again, I will go before you into Galilee.
Peter spoke up and said to Jesus, “I will never leave you, even though all the rest do!” | Peter answered and said unto him, Though all men shall be offended because of thee, yet will I never be offended.
Jesus said to Peter, “I tell you that before the rooster crows tonight, you will say three times that you do not know me.” | Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.
Peter answered, “I will never say that, even if I have to die with you!” And all the other disciples said the same thing. (; ) | Peter said unto him, Though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee. Likewise also said all the disciples.
Jesus Prays in Gethsemane Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.”
Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder. |
He took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee. Grief and anguish came over him, | And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy.
and he said to them, “The sorrow in my heart is so great that it almost crushes me. Stay here and keep watch with me.” | Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me.
He went a little farther on, threw himself face downward on the ground, and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, take this cup of suffering from me! Yet not what I want, but what you want.” | And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.
Then he returned to the three disciples and found them asleep; and he said to Peter, “How is it that you three were not able to keep watch with me for even one hour? | And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour?
Keep watch and pray that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” | Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
Once more Jesus went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cup of suffering cannot be taken away unless I drink it, your will be done.” | He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.
He returned once more and found the disciples asleep; they could not keep their eyes open. | And he came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy.
Again Jesus left them, went away, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. | And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words.
Then he returned to the disciples and said, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Look! The hour has come for the Son of Man to be handed over to the power of sinners. | Then cometh he to his disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
Get up, let us go. Look, here is the man who is betraying me!” (; ; ) | Rise, let us be going: behold, he is at hand that doth betray me.
The Arrest of Jesus Jesus was still speaking when Judas, one of the twelve disciples, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs and sent by the chief priests and the elders.
And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people. |
The traitor had given the crowd a signal: “The man I kiss is the one you want. Arrest him!” | Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he: hold him fast.
Judas went straight to Jesus and said, “Peace be with you, Teacher,” and kissed him. | And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, master; and kissed him.
Jesus answered, “Be quick about it, friend!” Then they came up, arrested Jesus, and held him tight. | And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus, and took him.
One of those who were with Jesus drew his sword and struck at the High Priest's slave, cutting off his ear. | And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest’s, and smote off his ear.
“Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him. “All who take the sword will die by the sword. | Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.
Don't you know that I could call on my Father for help, and at once he would send me more than twelve armies of angels? | Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?
But in that case, how could the Scriptures come true which say that this is what must happen?” | But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?
Then Jesus spoke to the crowd, “Did you have to come with swords and clubs to capture me, as though I were an outlaw? Every day I sat down and taught in the Temple, and you did not arrest me. | In that same hour said Jesus to the multitudes, Are ye come out as against a thief with swords and staves for to take me? I sat daily with you teaching in the temple, and ye laid no hold on me.
But all this has happened in order to make come true what the prophets wrote in the Scriptures.” Then all the disciples left him and ran away. (; ,,; ,,) | But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled.
Jesus before the Council Those who had arrested Jesus took him to the house of Caiaphas, the High Priest, where the teachers of the Law and the elders had gathered together.
And they that had laid hold on Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled. |
Peter followed from a distance, as far as the courtyard of the High Priest's house. He went into the courtyard and sat down with the guards to see how it would all come out. | But Peter followed him afar off unto the high priest’s palace, and went in, and sat with the servants, to see the end.
The chief priests and the whole Council tried to find some false evidence against Jesus to put him to death; | Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death;
but they could not find any, even though many people came forward and told lies about him. Finally two men stepped up | But found none: yea, though many false witnesses came, yet found they none. At the last came two false witnesses,
and said, “This man said, ‘I am able to tear down God's Temple and three days later build it back up.’” | And said, This fellow said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days.
The High Priest stood up and said to Jesus, “Have you no answer to give to this accusation against you?” | And the high priest arose, and said unto him, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee?
But Jesus kept quiet. Again the High Priest spoke to him, “In the name of the living God I now put you under oath: tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.” | But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God.
Jesus answered him, “So you say. But I tell all of you: from this time on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right side of the Almighty and coming on the clouds of heaven!” | Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.
At this the High Priest tore his clothes and said, “Blasphemy! We don't need any more witnesses! You have just heard his blasphemy! | Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy.
What do you think?” They answered, “He is guilty and must die.” | What think ye? They answered and said, He is guilty of death.
Then they spat in his face and beat him; and those who slapped him | Then did they spit in his face, and buffeted him; and others smote him with the palms of their hands,
said, “Prophesy for us, Messiah! Guess who hit you!” (; ; ,) | Saying, Prophesy unto us, thou Christ, Who is he that smote thee?
Peter Denies Jesus Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard when one of the High Priest's servant women came to him and said, “You, too, were with Jesus of Galilee.”
Now Peter sat without in the palace: and a damsel came unto him, saying, Thou also wast with Jesus of Galilee. |
But he denied it in front of them all. “I don't know what you are talking about,” he answered, | But he denied before them all, saying, I know not what thou sayest.
and went on out to the entrance of the courtyard. Another servant woman saw him and said to the men there, “He was with Jesus of Nazareth.” | And when he was gone out into the porch, another maid saw him, and said unto them that were there, This fellow was also with Jesus of Nazareth.
Again Peter denied it and answered, “I swear that I don't know that man!” | And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man.
After a little while the men standing there came to Peter. “Of course you are one of them,” they said. “After all, the way you speak gives you away!” | And after a while came unto him they that stood by, and said to Peter, Surely thou also art one of them; for thy speech bewrayeth thee.
Then Peter said, “I swear that I am telling the truth! May God punish me if I am not! I do not know that man!” Just then a rooster crowed, | Then began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And immediately the cock crew.
and Peter remembered what Jesus had told him: “Before the rooster crows, you will say three times that you do not know me.” He went out and wept bitterly. | And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly.
