The Parable of the Wedding Feast
Jesus again used parables in talking to the people.
And Jesus answered and spake unto them again by parables, and said,
2 “The Kingdom of heaven is like this. Once there was a king who prepared a wedding feast for his son. The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son,
3 He sent his servants to tell the invited guests to come to the feast, but they did not want to come. And sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come.
4 So he sent other servants with this message for the guests: ‘My feast is ready now; my steers and prize calves have been butchered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding feast!’ Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage.
5 But the invited guests paid no attention and went about their business: one went to his farm, another to his store, But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise:
6 while others grabbed the servants, beat them, and killed them. And the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew them.
7 The king was very angry; so he sent his soldiers, who killed those murderers and burned down their city. But when the king heard thereof, he was wroth: and he sent forth his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city.
8 Then he called his servants and said to them, ‘My wedding feast is ready, but the people I invited did not deserve it. Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy.
9 Now go to the main streets and invite to the feast as many people as you find.’ Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage.
10 So the servants went out into the streets and gathered all the people they could find, good and bad alike; and the wedding hall was filled with people. So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests.
11 “The king went in to look at the guests and saw a man who was not wearing wedding clothes. And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment:
12 ‘Friend, how did you get in here without wedding clothes?’ the king asked him. But the man said nothing. And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless.
13 Then the king told the servants, ‘Tie him up hand and foot, and throw him outside in the dark. There he will cry and gnash his teeth.’” Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
14 And Jesus concluded, “Many are invited, but few are chosen.” (; ) For many are called, but few are chosen.

The Question about Paying Taxes
The Pharisees went off and made a plan to trap Jesus with questions.
Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk.
16 Then they sent to him some of their disciples and some members of Herod's party. “Teacher,” they said, “we know that you tell the truth. You teach the truth about God's will for people, without worrying about what others think, because you pay no attention to anyone's status. And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men.
17 Tell us, then, what do you think? Is it against our Law to pay taxes to the Roman Emperor, or not?” Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Cesar, or not?
18 Jesus, however, was aware of their evil plan, and so he said, “You hypocrites! Why are you trying to trap me? But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites?
19 Show me the coin for paying the tax!” They brought him the coin, Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny.
20 and he asked them, “Whose face and name are these?” And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription?
21 “The Emperor's,” they answered. So Jesus said to them, “Well, then, pay to the Emperor what belongs to the Emperor, and pay to God what belongs to God.” They say unto him, Cesar’s. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Cesar the things which are Cesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.
22 When they heard this, they were amazed; and they left him and went away. (; ) When they had heard these words, they marvelled, and left him, and went their way.

The Question about Rising from Death
That same day some Sadducees came to Jesus and claimed that people will not rise from death.
The same day came to him the Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection, and asked him,
24 “Teacher,” they said, “Moses said that if a man who has no children dies, his brother must marry the widow so that they can have children who will be considered the dead man's children. Saying, Master, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.
25 Now, there were seven brothers who used to live here. The oldest got married and died without having children, so he left his widow to his brother. Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first, when he had married a wife, deceased, and, having no issue, left his wife unto his brother:
26 The same thing happened to the second brother, to the third, and finally to all seven. Likewise the second also, and the third, unto the seventh.
27 Last of all, the woman died. And last of all the woman died also.
28 Now, on the day when the dead rise to life, whose wife will she be? All of them had married her.” Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her.
29 Jesus answered them, “How wrong you are! It is because you don't know the Scriptures or God's power. Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.
30 For when the dead rise to life, they will be like the angels in heaven and will not marry. For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.
31 Now, as for the dead rising to life: haven't you ever read what God has told you? He said, But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying,
32 ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ He is the God of the living, not of the dead.” I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.
33 When the crowds heard this, they were amazed at his teaching. (; ) And when the multitude heard this, they were astonished at his doctrine.
34
The Great Commandment
When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they came together,
But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together.
35 and one of them, a teacher of the Law, tried to trap him with a question. Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,
36 “Teacher,” he asked, “which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
37 Jesus answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38 This is the greatest and the most important commandment. This is the first and great commandment.
39 The second most important commandment is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as you love yourself.’ And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
40 The whole Law of Moses and the teachings of the prophets depend on these two commandments.” (; ) On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
41
The Question about the Messiah
When some Pharisees gathered together, Jesus asked them,
While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,
42 “What do you think about the Messiah? Whose descendant is he?” “He is David's descendant,” they answered. Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David.
43 “Why, then,” Jesus asked, “did the Spirit inspire David to call him ‘Lord’? David said, He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying,
44 ‘The Lord said to my Lord: Sit here at my right side until I put your enemies under your feet.’ The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool?
45 If, then, David called him ‘Lord,’ how can the Messiah be David's descendant?” If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?
46 No one was able to give Jesus any answer, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions. And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.
