Jesus Teaches about Divorce When Jesus finished saying these things, he left Galilee and went to the territory of Judea on the other side of the Jordan River.
And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these sayings, he departed from Galilee, and came into the coasts of Judea beyond Jordan; |
Large crowds followed him, and he healed them there. | And great multitudes followed him; and he healed them there.
Some Pharisees came to him and tried to trap him by asking, “Does our Law allow a man to divorce his wife for whatever reason he wishes?” | The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?
Jesus answered, “Haven't you read the scripture that says that in the beginning the Creator made people male and female? | And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,
And God said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and unite with his wife, and the two will become one.’ | And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?
So they are no longer two, but one. No human being must separate, then, what God has joined together.” | Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
The Pharisees asked him, “Why, then, did Moses give the law for a man to hand his wife a divorce notice and send her away?” | They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?
Jesus answered, “Moses gave you permission to divorce your wives because you are so hard to teach. But it was not like that at the time of creation. | He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.
I tell you, then, that any man who divorces his wife for any cause other than her unfaithfulness, commits adultery if he marries some other woman.” | And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.
His disciples said to him, “If this is how it is between a man and his wife, it is better not to marry.” | His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry.
Jesus answered, “This teaching does not apply to everyone, but only to those to whom God has given it. | But he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given.
For there are different reasons why men cannot marry: some, because they were born that way; others, because men made them that way; and others do not marry for the sake of the Kingdom of heaven. Let him who can accept this teaching do so.” (; ) | For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother’s womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven’s sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.
Jesus Blesses Little Children Some people brought children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and to pray for them, but the disciples scolded the people.
Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them. |
Jesus said, “Let the children come to me and do not stop them, because the Kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” | But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.
He placed his hands on them and then went away. (; ) | And he laid his hands on them, and departed thence.
The Rich Young Man Once a man came to Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what good thing must I do to receive eternal life?”
And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? |
“Why do you ask me concerning what is good?” answered Jesus. “There is only One who is good. Keep the commandments if you want to enter life.” | And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
“What commandments?” he asked. Jesus answered, “Do not commit murder; do not commit adultery; do not steal; do not accuse anyone falsely; | He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,
respect your father and your mother; and love your neighbor as you love yourself.” | Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
“I have obeyed all these commandments,” the young man replied. “What else do I need to do?” | The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?
Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, go and sell all you have and give the money to the poor, and you will have riches in heaven; then come and follow me.” | Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.
When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he was very rich. | But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.
Jesus then said to his disciples, “I assure you: it will be very hard for rich people to enter the Kingdom of heaven. | Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven.
I repeat: it is much harder for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God than for a camel to go through the eye of a needle.” | And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
When the disciples heard this, they were completely amazed. “Who, then, can be saved?” they asked. | When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved?
Jesus looked straight at them and answered, “This is impossible for human beings, but for God everything is possible.” | But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.
Then Peter spoke up. “Look,” he said, “we have left everything and followed you. What will we have?” | Then answered Peter and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore?
Jesus said to them, “You can be sure that when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne in the New Age, then you twelve followers of mine will also sit on thrones, to rule the twelve tribes of Israel. | And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields for my sake, will receive a hundred times more and will be given eternal life. | And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name’s sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life.
But many who now are first will be last, and many who now are last will be first. | But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first.
