The Death of John the Baptist At that time Herod, the ruler of Galilee, heard about Jesus.
At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus, |
“He is really John the Baptist, who has come back to life,” he told his officials. “That is why he has this power to perform miracles.” | And said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.
For Herod had earlier ordered John's arrest, and he had him tied up and put in prison. He had done this because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife. | For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias’ sake, his brother Philip’s wife.
For some time John the Baptist had told Herod, “It isn't right for you to be married to Herodias!” | For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.
Herod wanted to kill him, but he was afraid of the Jewish people, because they considered John to be a prophet. | And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.
On Herod's birthday the daughter of Herodias danced in front of the whole group. Herod was so pleased | But when Herod’s birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod.
that he promised her, “I swear that I will give you anything you ask for!” | Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask.
At her mother's suggestion she asked him, “Give me here and now the head of John the Baptist on a plate!” | And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist’s head in a charger.
The king was sad, but because of the promise he had made in front of all his guests he gave orders that her wish be granted. | And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath’s sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her.
So he had John beheaded in prison. | And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.
The head was brought in on a plate and given to the girl, who took it to her mother. | And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother.
John's disciples came, carried away his body, and buried it; then they went and told Jesus. (; ; ) | And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.
Jesus Feeds Five Thousand When Jesus heard the news about John, he left there in a boat and went to a lonely place by himself. The people heard about it, and so they left their towns and followed him by land.
When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart: and when the people had heard thereof, they followed him on foot out of the cities. |
Jesus got out of the boat, and when he saw the large crowd, his heart was filled with pity for them, and he healed their sick. | And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.
That evening his disciples came to him and said, “It is already very late, and this is a lonely place. Send the people away and let them go to the villages to buy food for themselves.” | And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals.
“They don't have to leave,” answered Jesus. “You yourselves give them something to eat!” | But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat.
“All we have here are five loaves and two fish,” they replied. | And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes.
“Then bring them here to me,” Jesus said. | He said, Bring them hither to me.
He ordered the people to sit down on the grass; then he took the five loaves and the two fish, looked up to heaven, and gave thanks to God. He broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. | And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.
Everyone ate and had enough. Then the disciples took up twelve baskets full of what was left over. | And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full.
The number of men who ate was about five thousand, not counting the women and children. (; ) | And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children.
Jesus Walks on the Water Then Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side of the lake, while he sent the people away.
And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away. |
After sending the people away, he went up a hill by himself to pray. When evening came, Jesus was there alone; | And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.
and by this time the boat was far out in the lake, tossed about by the waves, because the wind was blowing against it. | But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.
Between three and six o'clock in the morning Jesus came to the disciples, walking on the water. | And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.
When they saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. “It's a ghost!” they said, and screamed with fear. | And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.
Jesus spoke to them at once. “Courage!” he said. “It is I. Don't be afraid!” | But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.
Then Peter spoke up. “Lord, if it is really you, order me to come out on the water to you.” | And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.
“Come!” answered Jesus. So Peter got out of the boat and started walking on the water to Jesus. | And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.
But when he noticed the strong wind, he was afraid and started to sink down in the water. “Save me, Lord!” he cried. | But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.
At once Jesus reached out and grabbed hold of him and said, “What little faith you have! Why did you doubt?” | And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?
They both got into the boat, and the wind died down. | And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.
Then the disciples in the boat worshiped Jesus. “Truly you are the Son of God!” they exclaimed. () | Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.
Jesus Heals the Sick in Gennesaret They crossed the lake and came to land at Gennesaret,
And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret. |
where the people recognized Jesus. So they sent for the sick people in all the surrounding country and brought them to Jesus. | And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased;
They begged him to let the sick at least touch the edge of his cloak; and all who touched it were made well. | And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.
