The Parable of the Sower Again Jesus began to teach beside Lake Galilee. The crowd that gathered around him was so large that he got into a boat and sat in it. The boat was out in the water, and the crowd stood on the shore at the water's edge.
And he began again to teach by the sea side: and there was gathered unto him a great multitude, so that he entered into a ship, and sat in the sea; and the whole multitude was by the sea on the land. |
He used parables to teach them many things, saying to them: | And he taught them many things by parables, and said unto them in his doctrine,
“Listen! Once there was a man who went out to sow grain. | Hearken; Behold, there went out a sower to sow:
As he scattered the seed in the field, some of it fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. | And it came to pass, as he sowed, some fell by the way side, and the fowls of the air came and devoured it up.
Some of it fell on rocky ground, where there was little soil. The seeds soon sprouted, because the soil wasn't deep. | And some fell on stony ground, where it had not much earth; and immediately it sprang up, because it had no depth of earth:
Then, when the sun came up, it burned the young plants; and because the roots had not grown deep enough, the plants soon dried up. | But when the sun was up, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away.
Some of the seed fell among thorn bushes, which grew up and choked the plants, and they didn't bear grain. | And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up, and choked it, and it yielded no fruit.
But some seeds fell in good soil, and the plants sprouted, grew, and bore grain: some had thirty grains, others sixty, and others one hundred.” | And other fell on good ground, and did yield fruit that sprang up and increased; and brought forth, some thirty, and some sixty, and some an hundred.
And Jesus concluded, “Listen, then, if you have ears!” (; ,) | And he said unto them, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
The Purpose of the Parables When Jesus was alone, some of those who had heard him came to him with the twelve disciples and asked him to explain the parables.
And when he was alone, they that were about him with the twelve asked of him the parable. |
“You have been given the secret of the Kingdom of God,” Jesus answered. “But the others, who are on the outside, hear all things by means of parables, | And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables:
so that, ‘They may look and look, yet not see; they may listen and listen, yet not understand. For if they did, they would turn to God, and he would forgive them.’” (; ) | That seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them.
Jesus Explains the Parable of the Sower Then Jesus asked them, “Don't you understand this parable? How, then, will you ever understand any parable?
And he said unto them, Know ye not this parable? and how then will ye know all parables? |
The sower sows God's message. | The sower soweth the word.
Some people are like the seeds that fall along the path; as soon as they hear the message, Satan comes and takes it away. | And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts.
Other people are like the seeds that fall on rocky ground. As soon as they hear the message, they receive it gladly. | And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness;
But it does not sink deep into them, and they don't last long. So when trouble or persecution comes because of the message, they give up at once. | And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word’s sake, immediately they are offended.
Other people are like the seeds sown among the thorn bushes. These are the ones who hear the message, | And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word,
but the worries about this life, the love for riches, and all other kinds of desires crowd in and choke the message, and they don't bear fruit. | And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.
But other people are like seeds sown in good soil. They hear the message, accept it, and bear fruit: some thirty, some sixty, and some one hundred.” () | And these are they which are sown on good ground; such as hear the word, and receive it, and bring forth fruit, some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some an hundred.
A Lamp under a Bowl Jesus continued, “Does anyone ever bring in a lamp and put it under a bowl or under the bed? Isn't it put on the lampstand?
And he said unto them, Is a candle brought to be put under a bushel, or under a bed? and not to be set on a candlestick? |
Whatever is hidden away will be brought out into the open, and whatever is covered up will be uncovered. | For there is nothing hid, which shall not be manifested; neither was any thing kept secret, but that it should come abroad.
Listen, then, if you have ears!” | If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.
He also said to them, “Pay attention to what you hear! The same rules you use to judge others will be used by God to judge you—but with even greater severity. | And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given.
Those who have something will be given more, and those who have nothing will have taken away from them even the little they have.” | For he that hath, to him shall be given: and he that hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he hath.
The Parable of the Growing Seed Jesus went on to say, “The Kingdom of God is like this. A man scatters seed in his field.
And he said, So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the ground; |
He sleeps at night, is up and about during the day, and all the while the seeds are sprouting and growing. Yet he does not know how it happens. | And should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring and grow up, he knoweth not how.
The soil itself makes the plants grow and bear fruit; first the tender stalk appears, then the head, and finally the head full of grain. | For the earth bringeth forth fruit of herself; first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear.
When the grain is ripe, the man starts cutting it with his sickle, because harvest time has come. (,,; ,) | But when the fruit is brought forth, immediately he putteth in the sickle, because the harvest is come.
The Parable of the Mustard Seed “What shall we say the Kingdom of God is like?” asked Jesus. “What parable shall we use to explain it?
And he said, Whereunto shall we liken the kingdom of God? or with what comparison shall we compare it? |
It is like this. A man takes a mustard seed, the smallest seed in the world, and plants it in the ground. | It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when it is sown in the earth, is less than all the seeds that be in the earth:
After a while it grows up and becomes the biggest of all plants. It puts out such large branches that the birds come and make their nests in its shade.” | But when it is sown, it groweth up, and becometh greater than all herbs, and shooteth out great branches; so that the fowls of the air may lodge under the shadow of it.
Jesus preached his message to the people, using many other parables like these; he told them as much as they could understand. | And with many such parables spake he the word unto them, as they were able to hear it.
He would not speak to them without using parables, but when he was alone with his disciples, he would explain everything to them. (; ) | But without a parable spake he not unto them: and when they were alone, he expounded all things to his disciples.
Jesus Calms a Storm On the evening of that same day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go across to the other side of the lake.”
And the same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side. |
So they left the crowd; the disciples got into the boat in which Jesus was already sitting, and they took him with them. Other boats were there too. | And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships.
Suddenly a strong wind blew up, and the waves began to spill over into the boat, so that it was about to fill with water. | And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full.
Jesus was in the back of the boat, sleeping with his head on a pillow. The disciples woke him up and said, “Teacher, don't you care that we are about to die?” | And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?
Jesus stood up and commanded the wind, “Be quiet!” and he said to the waves, “Be still!” The wind died down, and there was a great calm. | And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Why are you frightened? Do you still have no faith?” | And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?
But they were terribly afraid and began to say to one another, “Who is this man? Even the wind and the waves obey him!” | And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?
