Jesus Heals a Paralyzed Man A few days later Jesus went back to Capernaum, and the news spread that he was at home.
And again he entered into Capernaum after some days; and it was noised that he was in the house. |
So many people came together that there was no room left, not even out in front of the door. Jesus was preaching the message to them | And straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door: and he preached the word unto them.
when four men arrived, carrying a paralyzed man to Jesus. | And they come unto him, bringing one sick of the palsy, which was borne of four.
Because of the crowd, however, they could not get the man to him. So they made a hole in the roof right above the place where Jesus was. When they had made an opening, they let the man down, lying on his mat. | And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay.
Seeing how much faith they had, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, “My son, your sins are forgiven.” | When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.
Some teachers of the Law who were sitting there thought to themselves, | But there were certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts,
“How does he dare talk like this? This is blasphemy! God is the only one who can forgive sins!” | Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only?
At once Jesus knew what they were thinking, so he said to them, “Why do you think such things? | And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, he said unto them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts?
Is it easier to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, pick up your mat, and walk’? | Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk?
I will prove to you, then, that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, | But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,)
“I tell you, get up, pick up your mat, and go home!” | I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house.
While they all watched, the man got up, picked up his mat, and hurried away. They were all completely amazed and praised God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!” (; ) | And immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went forth before them all; insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this fashion.
Jesus Calls Levi Jesus went back again to the shore of Lake Galilee. A crowd came to him, and he started teaching them.
And he went forth again by the sea side; and all the multitude resorted unto him, and he taught them. |
As he walked along, he saw a tax collector, Levi son of Alphaeus, sitting in his office. Jesus said to him, “Follow me.” Levi got up and followed him. | And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alpheus sitting at the receipt of custom, and said unto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him.
Later on Jesus was having a meal in Levi's house. A large number of tax collectors and other outcasts was following Jesus, and many of them joined him and his disciples at the table. | And it came to pass, that, as Jesus sat at meat in his house, many publicans and sinners sat also together with Jesus and his disciples: for there were many, and they followed him.
Some teachers of the Law, who were Pharisees, saw that Jesus was eating with these outcasts and tax collectors, so they asked his disciples, “Why does he eat with such people?” | And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners, they said unto his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners?
Jesus heard them and answered, “People who are well do not need a doctor, but only those who are sick. I have not come to call respectable people, but outcasts.” (; ) | When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
The Question about Fasting On one occasion the followers of John the Baptist and the Pharisees were fasting. Some people came to Jesus and asked him, “Why is it that the disciples of John the Baptist and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but yours do not?”
And the disciples of John and of the Pharisees used to fast: and they come and say unto him, Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not? |
Jesus answered, “Do you expect the guests at a wedding party to go without food? Of course not! As long as the bridegroom is with them, they will not do that. | And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? as long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.
But the day will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast. | But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.
“No one uses a piece of new cloth to patch up an old coat, because the new patch will shrink and tear off some of the old cloth, making an even bigger hole. | No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new piece that filled it up taketh away from the old, and the rent is made worse.
Nor does anyone pour new wine into used wineskins, because the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the skins will be ruined. Instead, new wine must be poured into fresh wineskins.” (; ) | And no man putteth new wine into old bottles: else the new wine doth burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred: but new wine must be put into new bottles.
The Question about the Sabbath Jesus was walking through some wheat fields on a Sabbath. As his disciples walked along with him, they began to pick the heads of wheat.
And it came to pass, that he went through the corn fields on the sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn. |
So the Pharisees said to Jesus, “Look, it is against our Law for your disciples to do that on the Sabbath!” | And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful?
Jesus answered, “Have you never read what David did that time when he needed something to eat? He and his men were hungry, | And he said unto them, Have ye never read what David did, when he had need, and was an hungred, he, and they that were with him?
so he went into the house of God and ate the bread offered to God. This happened when Abiathar was the High Priest. According to our Law only the priests may eat this bread—but David ate it and even gave it to his men.” | How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him?
And Jesus concluded, “The Sabbath was made for the good of human beings; they were not made for the Sabbath. | And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:
So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.” | Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.
