The Triumphant Entry into Jerusalem As they approached Jerusalem, near the towns of Bethphage and Bethany, they came to the Mount of Olives. Jesus sent two of his disciples on ahead
And when they came nigh to Jerusalem, unto Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount of Olives, he sendeth forth two of his disciples, |
with these instructions: “Go to the village there ahead of you. As soon as you get there, you will find a colt tied up that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here. | And saith unto them, Go your way into the village over against you: and as soon as ye be entered into it, ye shall find a colt tied, whereon never man sat; loose him, and bring him.
And if someone asks you why you are doing that, say that the Master needs it and will send it back at once.” | And if any man say unto you, Why do ye this? say ye that the Lord hath need of him; and straightway he will send him hither.
So they went and found a colt out in the street, tied to the door of a house. As they were untying it, | And they went their way, and found the colt tied by the door without in a place where two ways met; and they loose him.
some of the bystanders asked them, “What are you doing, untying that colt?” | And certain of them that stood there said unto them, What do ye, loosing the colt?
They answered just as Jesus had told them, and the crowd let them go. | And they said unto them even as Jesus had commanded: and they let them go.
They brought the colt to Jesus, threw their cloaks over the animal, and Jesus got on. | And they brought the colt to Jesus, and cast their garments on him; and he sat upon him.
Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches in the field and spread them on the road. | And many spread their garments in the way: and others cut down branches off the trees, and strawed them in the way.
The people who were in front and those who followed behind began to shout, “Praise God! God bless him who comes in the name of the Lord! | And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna; Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord:
God bless the coming kingdom of King David, our father! Praise be to God!” | Blessed be the kingdom of our father David, that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest.
Jesus entered Jerusalem, went into the Temple, and looked around at everything. But since it was already late in the day, he went out to Bethany with the twelve disciples. (,) | And Jesus entered into Jerusalem, and into the temple: and when he had looked round about upon all things, and now the eventide was come, he went out unto Bethany with the twelve.
Jesus Curses the Fig Tree The next day, as they were coming back from Bethany, Jesus was hungry.
And on the morrow, when they were come from Bethany, he was hungry: |
He saw in the distance a fig tree covered with leaves, so he went to see if he could find any figs on it. But when he came to it, he found only leaves, because it was not the right time for figs. | And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came, if haply he might find any thing thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves; for the time of figs was not yet.
Jesus said to the fig tree, “No one shall ever eat figs from you again!” And his disciples heard him. (; ; ) | And Jesus answered and said unto it, No man eat fruit of thee hereafter for ever. And his disciples heard it.
Jesus Goes to the Temple When they arrived in Jerusalem, Jesus went to the Temple and began to drive out all those who were buying and selling. He overturned the tables of the moneychangers and the stools of those who sold pigeons,
And they come to Jerusalem: and Jesus went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves; |
and he would not let anyone carry anything through the Temple courtyards. | And would not suffer that any man should carry any vessel through the temple.
He then taught the people: “It is written in the Scriptures that God said, ‘My Temple will be called a house of prayer for the people of all nations.’ But you have turned it into a hideout for thieves!” | And he taught, saying unto them, Is it not written, My house shall be called of all nations the house of prayer? but ye have made it a den of thieves.
The chief priests and the teachers of the Law heard of this, so they began looking for some way to kill Jesus. They were afraid of him, because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching. | And the scribes and chief priests heard it, and sought how they might destroy him: for they feared him, because all the people was astonished at his doctrine.
When evening came, Jesus and his disciples left the city. () | And when even was come, he went out of the city.
The Lesson from the Fig Tree Early next morning, as they walked along the road, they saw the fig tree. It was dead all the way down to its roots.
And in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots. |
Peter remembered what had happened and said to Jesus, “Look, Teacher, the fig tree you cursed has died!” | And Peter calling to remembrance saith unto him, Master, behold, the fig tree which thou cursedst is withered away.
Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. | And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.
I assure you that whoever tells this hill to get up and throw itself in the sea and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. | For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.
For this reason I tell you: When you pray and ask for something, believe that you have received it, and you will be given whatever you ask for. | Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.
And when you stand and pray, forgive anything you may have against anyone, so that your Father in heaven will forgive the wrongs you have done.” (; ) | And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.
— | But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.
The Question about Jesus' Authority They arrived once again in Jerusalem. As Jesus was walking in the Temple, the chief priests, the teachers of the Law, and the elders came to him
And they come again to Jerusalem: and as he was walking in the temple, there come to him the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders, |
and asked him, “What right do you have to do these things? Who gave you such right?” | And say unto him, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority to do these things?
Jesus answered them, “I will ask you just one question, and if you give me an answer, I will tell you what right I have to do these things. | And Jesus answered and said unto them, I will also ask of you one question, and answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.
Tell me, where did John's right to baptize come from: was it from God or from human beings?” | The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men? answer me.
They started to argue among themselves: “What shall we say? If we answer, ‘From God,’ he will say, ‘Why, then, did you not believe John?’ | And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then did ye not believe him?
But if we say, ‘From human beings …’” (They were afraid of the people, because everyone was convinced that John had been a prophet.) | But if we shall say, Of men; they feared the people: for all men counted John, that he was a prophet indeed.
So their answer to Jesus was, “We don't know.” Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you, then, by what right I do these things.” | And they answered and said unto Jesus, We cannot tell. And Jesus answering saith unto them, Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.
