False Teachers The Spirit says clearly that some people will abandon the faith in later times; they will obey lying spirits and follow the teachings of demons.
Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; |
Such teachings are spread by deceitful liars, whose consciences are dead, as if burnt with a hot iron. | Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
Such people teach that it is wrong to marry and to eat certain foods. But God created those foods to be eaten, after a prayer of thanks, by those who are believers and have come to know the truth. | Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.
Everything that God has created is good; nothing is to be rejected, but everything is to be received with a prayer of thanks, | For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:
because the word of God and the prayer make it acceptable to God. | For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.
A Good Servant of Christ Jesus If you give these instructions to the believers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, as you feed yourself spiritually on the words of faith and of the true teaching which you have followed.
If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained. |
But keep away from those godless legends, which are not worth telling. Keep yourself in training for a godly life. | But refuse profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness.
Physical exercise has some value, but spiritual exercise is valuable in every way, because it promises life both for the present and for the future. | For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.
This is a true saying, to be completely accepted and believed. | This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation.
We struggle and work hard, because we have placed our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all and especially of those who believe. | For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.
Give them these instructions and these teachings. | These things command and teach.
Do not let anyone look down on you because you are young, but be an example for the believers in your speech, your conduct, your love, faith, and purity. | Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
Until I come, give your time and effort to the public reading of the Scriptures and to preaching and teaching. | Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.
Do not neglect the spiritual gift that is in you, which was given to you when the prophets spoke and the elders laid their hands on you. | Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.
Practice these things and devote yourself to them, in order that your progress may be seen by all. | Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.
Watch yourself and watch your teaching. Keep on doing these things, because if you do, you will save both yourself and those who hear you. | Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.
