A Life That Pleases God
Finally, our friends, you learned from us how you should live in order to please God. This is, of course, the way you have been living. And now we beg and urge you in the name of the Lord Jesus to do even more.
Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more.
2 For you know the instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus. For ye know what commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus.
3 God wants you to be holy and completely free from sexual immorality. For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:
4 Each of you should know how to live with your wife in a holy and honorable way, That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour;
5 not with a lustful desire, like the heathen who do not know God. Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God:
6 In this matter, then, none of you should do wrong to other Christians or take advantage of them. We have told you this before, and we strongly warned you that the Lord will punish those who do that. That no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter: because that the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified.
7 God did not call us to live in immorality, but in holiness. For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.
8 So then, whoever rejects this teaching is not rejecting a human being, but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit. He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his holy Spirit.
9 There is no need to write you about love for each other. You yourselves have been taught by God how you should love one another. But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another.
10 And you have, in fact, behaved like this toward all the believers in all of Macedonia. So we beg you, our friends, to do even more. And indeed ye do it toward all the brethren which are in all Macedonia: but we beseech you, brethren, that ye increase more and more;
11 Make it your aim to live a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to earn your own living, just as we told you before. And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you;
12 In this way you will win the respect of those who are not believers, and you will not have to depend on anyone for what you need. That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing.
13
The Lord's Coming
Our friends, we want you to know the truth about those who have died, so that you will not be sad, as are those who have no hope.
But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
14 We believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will take back with Jesus those who have died believing in him. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
15 What we are teaching you now is the Lord's teaching: we who are alive on the day the Lord comes will not go ahead of those who have died. For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.
16 There will be the shout of command, the archangel's voice, the sound of God's trumpet, and the Lord himself will come down from heaven. Those who have died believing in Christ will rise to life first; For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
17 then we who are living at that time will be gathered up along with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will always be with the Lord. Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
18 So then, encourage one another with these words. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.
