Jesus Heals a Roman Officer's Servant When Jesus had finished saying all these things to the people, he went to Capernaum.
Now when he had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he entered into Capernaum. |
A Roman officer there had a servant who was very dear to him; the man was sick and about to die. | And a certain centurion’s servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die.
When the officer heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to ask him to come and heal his servant. | And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant.
They came to Jesus and begged him earnestly, “This man really deserves your help. | And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying, That he was worthy for whom he should do this:
He loves our people and he himself built a synagogue for us.” | For he loveth our nation, and he hath built us a synagogue.
So Jesus went with them. He was not far from the house when the officer sent friends to tell him, “Sir, don't trouble yourself. I do not deserve to have you come into my house, | Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself: for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof:
neither do I consider myself worthy to come to you in person. Just give the order, and my servant will get well. | Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed.
I, too, am a man placed under the authority of superior officers, and I have soldiers under me. I order this one, ‘Go!’ and he goes; I order that one, ‘Come!’ and he comes; and I order my slave, ‘Do this!’ and he does it.” | For I also am a man set under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say unto one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.
Jesus was surprised when he heard this; he turned around and said to the crowd following him, “I tell you, I have never found faith like this, not even in Israel!” | When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.
The messengers went back to the officer's house and found his servant well. | And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the servant whole that had been sick.
Jesus Raises a Widow's Son Soon afterward Jesus went to a town named Nain, accompanied by his disciples and a large crowd.
And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people. |
Just as he arrived at the gate of the town, a funeral procession was coming out. The dead man was the only son of a woman who was a widow, and a large crowd from the town was with her. | Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her.
When the Lord saw her, his heart was filled with pity for her, and he said to her, “Don't cry.” | And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not.
Then he walked over and touched the coffin, and the men carrying it stopped. Jesus said, “Young man! Get up, I tell you!” | And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.
The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother. | And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother.
They all were filled with fear and praised God. “A great prophet has appeared among us!” they said; “God has come to save his people!” | And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people.
This news about Jesus went out through all the country and the surrounding territory. () | And this rumour of him went forth throughout all Judea, and throughout all the region round about.
The Messengers from John the Baptist When John's disciples told him about all these things, he called two of them
And the disciples of John shewed him of all these things. |
and sent them to the Lord to ask him, “Are you the one John said was going to come, or should we expect someone else?” | And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?
When they came to Jesus, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to ask if you are the one he said was going to come, or should we expect someone else?” | When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?
At that very time Jesus healed many people from their sicknesses, diseases, and evil spirits, and gave sight to many blind people. | And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight.
He answered John's messengers, “Go back and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind can see, the lame can walk, those who suffer from dreaded skin diseases are made clean, the deaf can hear, the dead are raised to life, and the Good News is preached to the poor. | Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.
How happy are those who have no doubts about me!” | And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.
After John's messengers had left, Jesus began to speak about him to the crowds: “When you went out to John in the desert, what did you expect to see? A blade of grass bending in the wind? | And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind?
What did you go out to see? A man dressed up in fancy clothes? People who dress like that and live in luxury are found in palaces! | But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings’ courts.
Tell me, what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes indeed, but you saw much more than a prophet. | But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet.
For John is the one of whom the scripture says: ‘God said, I will send my messenger ahead of you to open the way for you.’ | This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.
I tell you,” Jesus added, “John is greater than anyone who has ever lived. But the one who is least in the Kingdom of God is greater than John.” | For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.
All the people heard him; they and especially the tax collectors were the ones who had obeyed God's righteous demands and had been baptized by John. | And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.
But the Pharisees and the teachers of the Law rejected God's purpose for themselves and refused to be baptized by John. | But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.
Jesus continued, “Now to what can I compare the people of this day? What are they like? | And the Lord said, Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like?
They are like children sitting in the marketplace. One group shouts to the other, ‘We played wedding music for you, but you wouldn't dance! We sang funeral songs, but you wouldn't cry!’ | They are like unto children sitting in the marketplace, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept.
John the Baptist came, and he fasted and drank no wine, and you said, ‘He has a demon in him!’ | For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a devil.
The Son of Man came, and he ate and drank, and you said, ‘Look at this man! He is a glutton and wine drinker, a friend of tax collectors and other outcasts!’ | The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!
God's wisdom, however, is shown to be true by all who accept it.” | But wisdom is justified of all her children.
Jesus at the Home of Simon the Pharisee A Pharisee invited Jesus to have dinner with him, and Jesus went to his house and sat down to eat.
And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to meat. |
In that town was a woman who lived a sinful life. She heard that Jesus was eating in the Pharisee's house, so she brought an alabaster jar full of perfume | And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster box of ointment,
and stood behind Jesus, by his feet, crying and wetting his feet with her tears. Then she dried his feet with her hair, kissed them, and poured the perfume on them. | And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.
When the Pharisee saw this, he said to himself, “If this man really were a prophet, he would know who this woman is who is touching him; he would know what kind of sinful life she lives!” | Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.
Jesus spoke up and said to him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.” “Yes, Teacher,” he said, “tell me.” | And Jesus answering said unto him, Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And he saith, Master, say on.
“There were two men who owed money to a moneylender,” Jesus began. “One owed him five hundred silver coins, and the other owed him fifty. | There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty.
Neither of them could pay him back, so he canceled the debts of both. Which one, then, will love him more?” | And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?
“I suppose,” answered Simon, “that it would be the one who was forgiven more.” “You are right,” said Jesus. | Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged.
Then he turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your home, and you gave me no water for my feet, but she has washed my feet with her tears and dried them with her hair. | And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head.
You did not welcome me with a kiss, but she has not stopped kissing my feet since I came. | Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet.
You provided no olive oil for my head, but she has covered my feet with perfume. | My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment.
I tell you, then, the great love she has shown proves that her many sins have been forgiven. But whoever has been forgiven little shows only a little love.” | Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.
Then Jesus said to the woman, “Your sins are forgiven.” | And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven.
The others sitting at the table began to say to themselves, “Who is this, who even forgives sins?” | And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also?
But Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” | And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.
