The Temptation of Jesus
Jesus returned from the Jordan full of the Holy Spirit and was led by the Spirit into the desert,
And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
2 where he was tempted by the Devil for forty days. In all that time he ate nothing, so that he was hungry when it was over. Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered.
3 The Devil said to him, “If you are God's Son, order this stone to turn into bread.” And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread.
4 But Jesus answered, “The scripture says, ‘Human beings cannot live on bread alone.’” And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.
5 Then the Devil took him up and showed him in a second all the kingdoms of the world. And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
6 “I will give you all this power and all this wealth,” the Devil told him. “It has all been handed over to me, and I can give it to anyone I choose. And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.
7 All this will be yours, then, if you worship me.” If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.
8 Jesus answered, “The scripture says, ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve only him!’” And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
9 Then the Devil took him to Jerusalem and set him on the highest point of the Temple, and said to him, “If you are God's Son, throw yourself down from here. And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence:
10 For the scripture says, ‘God will order his angels to take good care of you.’ For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee:
11 It also says, ‘They will hold you up with their hands so that not even your feet will be hurt on the stones.’” And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
12 But Jesus answered, “The scripture says, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
13 When the Devil finished tempting Jesus in every way, he left him for a while. (; ,) And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.
14
Jesus Begins His Work in Galilee
Then Jesus returned to Galilee, and the power of the Holy Spirit was with him. The news about him spread throughout all that territory.
And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.
15 He taught in the synagogues and was praised by everyone. (; ) And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all.
16
Jesus Is Rejected at Nazareth
Then Jesus went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath he went as usual to the synagogue. He stood up to read the Scriptures
And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.
17 and was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it is written, And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has chosen me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free the oppressed The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
19 and announce that the time has come when the Lord will save his people.” To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
20 Jesus rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. All the people in the synagogue had their eyes fixed on him, And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.
21 as he said to them, “This passage of scripture has come true today, as you heard it being read.” And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.
22 They were all well impressed with him and marveled at the eloquent words that he spoke. They said, “Isn't he the son of Joseph?” And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph’s son?
23 He said to them, “I am sure that you will quote this proverb to me, ‘Doctor, heal yourself.’ You will also tell me to do here in my hometown the same things you heard were done in Capernaum. And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country.
24 I tell you this,” Jesus added, “prophets are never welcomed in their hometown. And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country.
25 Listen to me: it is true that there were many widows in Israel during the time of Elijah, when there was no rain for three and a half years and a severe famine spread throughout the whole land. But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land;
26 Yet Elijah was not sent to anyone in Israel, but only to a widow living in Zarephath in the territory of Sidon. But unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow.
27 And there were many people suffering from a dreaded skin disease who lived in Israel during the time of the prophet Elisha; yet not one of them was healed, but only Naaman the Syrian.” And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian.
28 When the people in the synagogue heard this, they were filled with anger. And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath,
29 They rose up, dragged Jesus out of town, and took him to the top of the hill on which their town was built. They meant to throw him over the cliff, And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong.
30 but he walked through the middle of the crowd and went his way. () But he passing through the midst of them went his way,
31
A Man with an Evil Spirit
Then Jesus went to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, where he taught the people on the Sabbath.
And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days.
32 They were all amazed at the way he taught, because he spoke with authority. And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power.
33 In the synagogue was a man who had the spirit of an evil demon in him; he screamed out in a loud voice, And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice,
34 “Ah! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Are you here to destroy us? I know who you are: you are God's holy messenger!” Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God.
35 Jesus ordered the spirit, “Be quiet and come out of the man!” The demon threw the man down in front of them and went out of him without doing him any harm. And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not.
36 The people were all amazed and said to one another, “What kind of words are these? With authority and power this man gives orders to the evil spirits, and they come out!” And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out.
37 And the report about Jesus spread everywhere in that region. (; ) And the fame of him went out into every place of the country round about.
38
Jesus Heals Many People
Jesus left the synagogue and went to Simon's home. Simon's mother-in-law was sick with a high fever, and they spoke to Jesus about her.
And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon’s house. And Simon’s wife’s mother was taken with a great fever; and they besought him for her.
39 He went and stood at her bedside and ordered the fever to leave her. The fever left her, and she got up at once and began to wait on them. And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered unto them.
40 After sunset all who had friends who were sick with various diseases brought them to Jesus; he placed his hands on every one of them and healed them all. Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them.
41 Demons also went out from many people, screaming, “You are the Son of God!” Jesus gave the demons an order and would not let them speak, because they knew he was the Messiah. () And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ.

Jesus Preaches in the Synagogues
At daybreak Jesus left the town and went off to a lonely place. The people started looking for him, and when they found him, they tried to keep him from leaving.
And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place: and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them.
43 But he said to them, “I must preach the Good News about the Kingdom of God in other towns also, because that is what God sent me to do.” And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent.
44 So he preached in the synagogues throughout the country. And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee.
