Jesus Sends Out the Seventy-Two After this the Lord chose another seventy-two men and sent them out two by two, to go ahead of him to every town and place where he himself was about to go.
After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come. |
He said to them, “There is a large harvest, but few workers to gather it in. Pray to the owner of the harvest that he will send out workers to gather in his harvest. | Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.
Go! I am sending you like lambs among wolves. | Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves.
Don't take a purse or a beggar's bag or shoes; don't stop to greet anyone on the road. | Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way.
Whenever you go into a house, first say, ‘Peace be with this house.’ | And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house.
If someone who is peace-loving lives there, let your greeting of peace remain on that person; if not, take back your greeting of peace. | And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again.
Stay in that same house, eating and drinking whatever they offer you, for workers should be given their pay. Don't move around from one house to another. | And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house.
Whenever you go into a town and are made welcome, eat what is set before you, | And into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you:
heal the sick in that town, and say to the people there, ‘The Kingdom of God has come near you.’ | And heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.
But whenever you go into a town and are not welcomed, go out in the streets and say, | But into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you not, go your ways out into the streets of the same, and say,
‘Even the dust from your town that sticks to our feet we wipe off against you. But remember that the Kingdom of God has come near you!’ | Even the very dust of your city, which cleaveth on us, we do wipe off against you: notwithstanding be ye sure of this, that the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.
I assure you that on the Judgment Day God will show more mercy to Sodom than to that town! () | But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, than for that city.
The Unbelieving Towns “How terrible it will be for you, Chorazin! How terrible for you too, Bethsaida! If the miracles which were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, the people there would have long ago sat down, put on sackcloth, and sprinkled ashes on themselves, to show that they had turned from their sins!
Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon, which have been done in you, they had a great while ago repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. |
God will show more mercy on the Judgment Day to Tyre and Sidon than to you. | But it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment, than for you.
And as for you, Capernaum! Did you want to lift yourself up to heaven? You will be thrown down to hell!” | And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted to heaven, shalt be thrust down to hell.
Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever listens to you listens to me; whoever rejects you rejects me; and whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me.” | He that heareth you heareth me; and he that despiseth you despiseth me; and he that despiseth me despiseth him that sent me.
The Return of the Seventy-Two The seventy-two men came back in great joy. “Lord,” they said, “even the demons obeyed us when we gave them a command in your name!”
And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name. |
Jesus answered them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. | And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.
Listen! I have given you authority, so that you can walk on snakes and scorpions and overcome all the power of the Enemy, and nothing will hurt you. | Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
But don't be glad because the evil spirits obey you; rather be glad because your names are written in heaven.” (; ,) | Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.
Jesus Rejoices At that time Jesus was filled with joy by the Holy Spirit and said, “Father, Lord of heaven and earth! I thank you because you have shown to the unlearned what you have hidden from the wise and learned. Yes, Father, this was how you were pleased to have it happen.
In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight. |
“My Father has given me all things. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.” | All things are delivered to me of my Father: and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him.
Then Jesus turned to the disciples and said to them privately, “How fortunate you are to see the things you see! | And he turned him unto his disciples, and said privately, Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see:
I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see, but they could not, and to hear what you hear, but they did not.” | For I tell you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.
The Parable of the Good Samaritan A teacher of the Law came up and tried to trap Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to receive eternal life?”
And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? |
Jesus answered him, “What do the Scriptures say? How do you interpret them?” | He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou?
The man answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind’; and ‘Love your neighbor as you love yourself.’” | And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.
“You are right,” Jesus replied; “do this and you will live.” | And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.
But the teacher of the Law wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “Who is my neighbor?” | But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour?
Jesus answered, “There was once a man who was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho when robbers attacked him, stripped him, and beat him up, leaving him half dead. | And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.
It so happened that a priest was going down that road; but when he saw the man, he walked on by on the other side. | And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.
In the same way a Levite also came there, went over and looked at the man, and then walked on by on the other side. | And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side.
But a Samaritan who was traveling that way came upon the man, and when he saw him, his heart was filled with pity. | But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him,
He went over to him, poured oil and wine on his wounds and bandaged them; then he put the man on his own animal and took him to an inn, where he took care of him. | And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.
The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Take care of him,’ he told the innkeeper, ‘and when I come back this way, I will pay you whatever else you spend on him.’” | And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.
And Jesus concluded, “In your opinion, which one of these three acted like a neighbor toward the man attacked by the robbers?” | Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?
The teacher of the Law answered, “The one who was kind to him.” Jesus replied, “You go, then, and do the same.” | And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.
Jesus Visits Martha and Mary As Jesus and his disciples went on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha welcomed him in her home.
Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. |
She had a sister named Mary, who sat down at the feet of the Lord and listened to his teaching. | And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word.
Martha was upset over all the work she had to do, so she came and said, “Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her to come and help me!” | But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.
The Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha! You are worried and troubled over so many things, | And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:
but just one is needed. Mary has chosen the right thing, and it will not be taken away from her.” | But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
