Christian Giving
Our friends, we want you to know what God's grace has accomplished in the churches in Macedonia.
Moreover, brethren, we do you to wit of the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia;
2 They have been severely tested by the troubles they went through; but their joy was so great that they were extremely generous in their giving, even though they are very poor. How that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality.
3 I can assure you that they gave as much as they could, and even more than they could. Of their own free will For to their power, I bear record, yea, and beyond their power they were willing of themselves;
4 they begged us and pleaded for the privilege of having a part in helping God's people in Judea. Praying us with much intreaty that we would receive the gift, and take upon us the fellowship of the ministering to the saints.
5 It was more than we could have hoped for! First they gave themselves to the Lord; and then, by God's will they gave themselves to us as well. And this they did, not as we hoped, but first gave their own selves to the Lord, and unto us by the will of God.
6 So we urged Titus, who began this work, to continue it and help you complete this special service of love. Insomuch that we desired Titus, that as he had begun, so he would also finish in you the same grace also.
7 You are so rich in all you have: in faith, speech, and knowledge, in your eagerness to help and in your love for us. And so we want you to be generous also in this service of love. Therefore, as ye abound in every thing, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also.
8 I am not laying down any rules. But by showing how eager others are to help, I am trying to find out how real your own love is. I speak not by commandment, but by occasion of the forwardness of others, and to prove the sincerity of your love.
9 You know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ; rich as he was, he made himself poor for your sake, in order to make you rich by means of his poverty. For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.
10 My opinion is that it is better for you to finish now what you began last year. You were the first, not only to act, but also to be willing to act. And herein I give my advice: for this is expedient for you, who have begun before, not only to do, but also to be forward a year ago.
11 On with it, then, and finish the job! Be as eager to finish it as you were to plan it, and do it with what you now have. Now therefore perform the doing of it; that as there was a readiness to will, so there may be a performance also out of that which ye have.
12 If you are eager to give, God will accept your gift on the basis of what you have to give, not on what you don't have. For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not.
13 — For I mean not that other men be eased, and ye burdened:
14 I am not trying to relieve others by putting a burden on you; but since you have plenty at this time, it is only fair that you should help those who are in need. Then, when you are in need and they have plenty, they will help you. In this way both are treated equally. But by an equality, that now at this time your abundance may be a supply for their want, that their abundance also may be a supply for your want: that there may be equality:
15 As the scripture says, “The one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little.” As it is written, He that had gathered much had nothing over; and he that had gathered little had no lack.
16
Titus and His Companions
How we thank God for making Titus as eager as we are to help you!
But thanks be to God, which put the same earnest care into the heart of Titus for you.
17 Not only did he welcome our request; he was so eager to help that of his own free will he decided to go to you. For indeed he accepted the exhortation; but being more forward, of his own accord he went unto you.
18 With him we are sending the brother who is highly respected in all the churches for his work in preaching the gospel. And we have sent with him the brother, whose praise is in the gospel throughout all the churches;
19 And besides that, he has been chosen and appointed by the churches to travel with us as we carry out this service of love for the sake of the Lord's glory and in order to show that we want to help. And not that only, but who was also chosen of the churches to travel with us with this grace, which is administered by us to the glory of the same Lord, and declaration of your ready mind:
20 We are being careful not to stir up any complaints about the way we handle this generous gift. Avoiding this, that no man should blame us in this abundance which is administered by us:
21 Our purpose is to do what is right, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of others. Providing for honest things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men.
22 So we are sending our brother with them; we have tested him many times and found him always very eager to help. And now that he has so much confidence in you, he is all the more eager to help. And we have sent with them our brother, whom we have oftentimes proved diligent in many things, but now much more diligent, upon the great confidence which I have in you.
23 As for Titus, he is my partner and works with me to help you; as for the other brothers who are going with him, they represent the churches and bring glory to Christ. Whether any do enquire of Titus, he is my partner and fellowhelper concerning you: or our brethren be enquired of, they are the messengers of the churches, and the glory of Christ.
24 Show your love to them, so that all the churches will be sure of it and know that we are right in boasting about you. Wherefore shew ye to them, and before the churches, the proof of your love, and of our boasting on your behalf.
