In our work together with God, then, we beg you who have received God's grace not to let it be wasted. | We then, as workers together with him, beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain.
Hear what God says: “When the time came for me to show you favor, I heard you; when the day arrived for me to save you, I helped you.” Listen! This is the hour to receive God's favor; today is the day to be saved! | (For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)
We do not want anyone to find fault with our work, so we try not to put obstacles in anyone's way. | Giving no offence in any thing, that the ministry be not blamed:
Instead, in everything we do we show that we are God's servants by patiently enduring troubles, hardships, and difficulties. | But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses,
We have been beaten, jailed, and mobbed; we have been overworked and have gone without sleep or food. | In stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labours, in watchings, in fastings;
By our purity, knowledge, patience, and kindness we have shown ourselves to be God's servants—by the Holy Spirit, by our true love, | By pureness, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned,
by our message of truth, and by the power of God. We have righteousness as our weapon, both to attack and to defend ourselves. | By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left,
We are honored and disgraced; we are insulted and praised. We are treated as liars, yet we speak the truth; | By honour and dishonour, by evil report and good report: as deceivers, and yet true;
as unknown, yet we are known by all; as though we were dead, but, as you see, we live on. Although punished, we are not killed; | As unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and, behold, we live; as chastened, and not killed;
although saddened, we are always glad; we seem poor, but we make many people rich; we seem to have nothing, yet we really possess everything. | As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.
Dear friends in Corinth! We have spoken frankly to you; we have opened our hearts wide. | O ye Corinthians, our mouth is open unto you, our heart is enlarged.
It is not we who have closed our hearts to you; it is you who have closed your hearts to us. | Ye are not straitened in us, but ye are straitened in your own bowels.
I speak now as though you were my children: show us the same feelings that we have for you. Open your hearts wide! | Now for a recompence in the same, (I speak as unto my children,) be ye also enlarged.
Warning against Pagan Influences Do not try to work together as equals with unbelievers, for it cannot be done. How can right and wrong be partners? How can light and darkness live together?
Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? |
How can Christ and the Devil agree? What does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? | And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?
How can God's temple come to terms with pagan idols? For we are the temple of the living God! As God himself has said, “I will make my home with my people and live among them; I will be their God, and they shall be my people.” | And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
And so the Lord says, “You must leave them and separate yourselves from them. Have nothing to do with what is unclean, and I will accept you. | Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,
I will be your father, and you shall be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.” | And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
