Paul and the False Apostles I wish you would tolerate me, even when I am a bit foolish. Please do!
Would to God ye could bear with me a little in my folly: and indeed bear with me. |
I am jealous for you, just as God is; you are like a pure virgin whom I have promised in marriage to one man only, Christ himself. | For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.
I am afraid that your minds will be corrupted and that you will abandon your full and pure devotion to Christ—in the same way that Eve was deceived by the snake's clever lies. | But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.
For you gladly tolerate anyone who comes to you and preaches a different Jesus, not the one we preached; and you accept a spirit and a gospel completely different from the Spirit and the gospel you received from us! | For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.
I do not think that I am the least bit inferior to those very special so-called “apostles” of yours! | For I suppose I was not a whit behind the very chiefest apostles.
Perhaps I am an amateur in speaking, but certainly not in knowledge; we have made this clear to you at all times and in all conditions. | But though I be rude in speech, yet not in knowledge; but we have been throughly made manifest among you in all things.
I did not charge you a thing when I preached the Good News of God to you; I humbled myself in order to make you important. Was that wrong of me? | Have I committed an offence in abasing myself that ye might be exalted, because I have preached to you the gospel of God freely?
While I was working among you, I was paid by other churches. I was robbing them, so to speak, in order to help you. | I robbed other churches, taking wages of them, to do you service.
And during the time I was with you I did not bother you for help when I needed money; the believers who came from Macedonia brought me everything I needed. As in the past, so in the future: I will never be a burden to you! | And when I was present with you, and wanted, I was chargeable to no man: for that which was lacking to me the brethren which came from Macedonia supplied: and in all things I have kept myself from being burdensome unto you, and so will I keep myself.
By Christ's truth in me, I promise that this boast of mine will not be silenced anywhere in all of Achaia. | As the truth of Christ is in me, no man shall stop me of this boasting in the regions of Achaia.
Do I say this because I don't love you? God knows I love you! | Wherefore? because I love you not? God knoweth.
I will go on doing what I am doing now, in order to keep those other “apostles” from having any reason for boasting and saying that they work in the same way that we do. | But what I do, that I will do, that I may cut off occasion from them which desire occasion; that wherein they glory, they may be found even as we.
Those men are not true apostles—they are false apostles, who lie about their work and disguise themselves to look like real apostles of Christ. | For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.
Well, no wonder! Even Satan can disguise himself to look like an angel of light! | And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.
So it is no great thing if his servants disguise themselves to look like servants of righteousness. In the end they will get exactly what their actions deserve. | Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.
Paul's Sufferings as an Apostle I repeat: no one should think that I am a fool. But if you do, at least accept me as a fool, just so I will have a little to boast of.
I say again, Let no man think me a fool; if otherwise, yet as a fool receive me, that I may boast myself a little. |
Of course what I am saying now is not what the Lord would have me say; in this matter of boasting I am really talking like a fool. | That which I speak, I speak it not after the Lord, but as it were foolishly, in this confidence of boasting.
But since there are so many who boast for merely human reasons, I will do the same. | Seeing that many glory after the flesh, I will glory also.
You yourselves are so wise, and so you gladly tolerate fools! | For ye suffer fools gladly, seeing ye yourselves are wise.
You tolerate anyone who orders you around or takes advantage of you or traps you or looks down on you or slaps you in the face. | For ye suffer, if a man bring you into bondage, if a man devour you, if a man take of you, if a man exalt himself, if a man smite you on the face.
I am ashamed to admit that we were too timid to do those things! But if anyone dares to boast about something—I am talking like a fool—I will be just as daring. | I speak as concerning reproach, as though we had been weak. Howbeit whereinsoever any is bold, (I speak foolishly,) I am bold also.
Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they Abraham's descendants? So am I. | Are they Hebrews? so am I. Are they Israelites? so am I. Are they the seed of Abraham? so am I.
Are they Christ's servants? I sound like a madman—but I am a better servant than they are! I have worked much harder, I have been in prison more times, I have been whipped much more, and I have been near death more often. | Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as a fool) I am more; in labours more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths oft.
Five times I was given the thirty-nine lashes by the Jews; | Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one.
three times I was whipped by the Romans; and once I was stoned. I have been in three shipwrecks, and once I spent twenty-four hours in the water. | Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep;
In my many travels I have been in danger from floods and from robbers, in danger from my own people and from Gentiles; there have been dangers in the cities, dangers in the wilds, dangers on the high seas, and dangers from false friends. | In journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren;
There has been work and toil; often I have gone without sleep; I have been hungry and thirsty; I have often been without enough food, shelter, or clothing. | In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness.
And not to mention other things, every day I am under the pressure of my concern for all the churches. | Beside those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches.
When someone is weak, then I feel weak too; when someone is led into sin, I am filled with distress. | Who is weak, and I am not weak? who is offended, and I burn not?
If I must boast, I will boast about things that show how weak I am. | If I must needs glory, I will glory of the things which concern mine infirmities.
The God and Father of the Lord Jesus—blessed be his name forever!—knows that I am not lying. | The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which is blessed for evermore, knoweth that I lie not.
When I was in Damascus, the governor under King Aretas placed guards at the city gates to arrest me. | In Damascus the governor under Aretas the king kept the city of the Damascenes with a garrison, desirous to apprehend me:
But I was let down in a basket through an opening in the wall and escaped from him. | And through a window in a basket was I let down by the wall, and escaped his hands.
