Love I may be able to speak the languages of human beings and even of angels, but if I have no love, my speech is no more than a noisy gong or a clanging bell.
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. |
I may have the gift of inspired preaching; I may have all knowledge and understand all secrets; I may have all the faith needed to move mountains—but if I have no love, I am nothing. | And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
I may give away everything I have, and even give up my body to be burned—but if I have no love, this does me no good. | And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
Love is patient and kind; it is not jealous or conceited or proud; | Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
love is not ill-mannered or selfish or irritable; love does not keep a record of wrongs; | Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
love is not happy with evil, but is happy with the truth. | Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
Love never gives up; and its faith, hope, and patience never fail. | Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
Love is eternal. There are inspired messages, but they are temporary; there are gifts of speaking in strange tongues, but they will cease; there is knowledge, but it will pass. | Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
For our gifts of knowledge and of inspired messages are only partial; | For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
but when what is perfect comes, then what is partial will disappear. | But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
When I was a child, my speech, feelings, and thinking were all those of a child; now that I am an adult, I have no more use for childish ways. | When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
What we see now is like a dim image in a mirror; then we shall see face-to-face. What I know now is only partial; then it will be complete—as complete as God's knowledge of me. | For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
Meanwhile these three remain: faith, hope, and love; and the greatest of these is love. | And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
